The Recording Academy Chicago Chapter played host for GRAMMYs On The Road at Lollapalooza on Aug. 3–5 in Grant Park in Chicago. The Chapter conducted exclusive backstage interviews with artists performing at the festival, including UK indie rock quartet Bombay Bicycle Club and Canadian quintet Walk Off The Earth.
Bombay Bicycle Club discussed the difference between fans in the UK and the United States, songwriting and how they balance business and music, among other topics.
"[We write] everywhere, really," said Bombay Bicycle Club frontman Jack Steadman. "Usually when you sit yourself down to write music, nothing really happens. So usually it's in unexpected places and it's quite spontaneous."
Hailing from North London, Bombay Bicycle Club is comprised of Steadman, drummer Suren de Saram, guitarist Jamie MacColl, and bassist Ed Nash. Their debut album, I Had The Blues But I Shook Them Loose, was released in 2009. The group won the Best New Band award at the 2010 NME Awards. Bombay Bicycle Club's most recent album, 2011's A Different Kind Of Fix, reached No. 22 on Billboard's Heatseekers chart.
Walk Off The Earth discussed their viral cover of Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know," creative influences and the importance of the Internet in the music industry, among other topics.
"We've been working towards having a viral video for a long time, a couple of years now," said multi-instrumentalist Sarah Blackwood regarding their cover of Gotye's hit. "We knew that it would eventually happen. … When people watch that video, they go back and look at all of our other stuff."
Based in Burlington, Ontario, Walk Off The Earth is a musical five-piece band consisting of Blackwood, Joel Cassady, Gianni Luminati, Ryan Marshall, and Mike Taylor. They have released two albums, 2007's Smooth Like Stone On A Beach and 2010's My Rock. Their unique interpretation of Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know" has garnered more than 132 million views on YouTube. Walk Off The Earth 's latest single, "Little Boxes," was released in March.
