GRAMMY Camp Gets In The New York Groove

New York installment of GRAMMY Foundation's residential summer music experience culminates with launch party at Tishman Auditorium

More than 30 high school students from across the United States participated in the New York installment of the GRAMMY Foundation's eighth annual GRAMMY Camp on Aug. 6–13. Hosted by Converse Rubber Tracks studio, the eight-day residential summer music experience provided an interactive professional environment for students to participate in music's creative process — from the first spark of original material through the promotion of a finished product. Students participated in several career tracks, including Electronic Music Production, Songwriting, Marketing & Management, Engineering for Audio & Video, and performance-based tracks for instruments such as drums, guitar, flute, bass, and saxophone.

GRAMMY Camp New York culminated with a launch party on Aug. 12 at Tishman Auditorium, with students performing original songs and pitching products created during GRAMMY Camp. Performers included campers Meghan Campbell, Cameron Capers, Ashley Charles, Caroline Glattly, Nathan Gott, Emilee Holgate, Kaya Lynch, Travis Ross, and Hope Street. Student product ideas included Woop!, an artist aggregation app for smart phones, and Tour Haven, a free lodging facility for touring bands.

Camp participants received feedback on their songs from music industry professionals and artists, including R&B/hip-hop artist Ryan Leslie, GRAMMY-winning producer Michael Mangini, music journalist Kim Osorio, and Microsoft Chief Marketing Strategist David Webster.

"GRAMMY Camp is about preparing these young people to be able to develop strategies that will help them have the best opportunity at a successful career," said David R. Sears, Senior Director of Education for the GRAMMY Foundation. 

This year's installment marked the second consecutive year GRAMMY Camp took place in New York. In 2012 the GRAMMY Foundation also hosted GRAMMY Camp installments in Los Angeles and Nashville.
