Did you know?: Mixing elements of blues, folk and gospel, Mavis Staples' You Are Not Alone features covers of songs written by the Rev. Gary Davis, John Fogerty, Randy Newman, and Allen Toussaint, as well as traditional gospel songs and readings of "Don't Knock" and "Downward Road," written by her father, Pops Staples. Produced by Wilco's Jeff Tweedy, the album topped Billboard's Top Gospel Albums chart, and also made the R&B Albums, Top Independent Albums and Billboard 200 charts. Born in Chicago, Staples gained notoriety in the '60s as lead singer of the Staple Singers. The group signed with the Memphis-based Stax Records in 1968, and their first two albums for the label, Soul Folk In Action and We'll Get Over, were produced by legendary soul guitarist Steve Cropper. The group scored their first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit in 1972 with "I'll Take You There," which was written by Stax Records head Al Bell, who received a Recording Academy Trustees Award this year. The Staple Singers were honored with a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Staples has five prior GRAMMY nominations, receiving her first in 1961 while with the Staple Singers for Best Gospel Or Other Religious Recording for Swing Low.
