When Mary J. Blige was awarded Best R&B Album at the 2007 GRAMMYs, it wasn't her first win, but it was perhaps her most important one to date. Not only was it her first time winning in the Category, but it also marked her first time accepting a golden gramophone on stage — and even more notably, the win was for an album that was just as monumental for her as an artist: The Breakthrough.

Blige was visibly emotional as she took the mic, sharing that The Breakthrough proved her talents while also showing her growth as a person. "Tonight, we celebrate the better human being [I've become], because for so many years, I had been talked about negatively, but this time, I’ve been talked about positively by so many people."

She closed things out by thanking every single person that helped her grow along the way, from her husband to co-producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. Revisit her heartfelt speech above, and head to GRAMMY.com/videos for more episodes of GRAMMY Rewind.
