Lady Gaga and Bruno Mars brought another solemn and beautiful moment to the 2025 GRAMMYs with their own tribute to Los Angeles.
Following a video revealing the widespread devastation of the L.A. wildfires, the pair appeared onstage to perform "California Dreamin’" (originally recorded by Barry McGuire but made famous by the Mamas & The Papas). With Gaga draped in a sheer, flower-embroidered maxi dress and Mars in a tan suit and straw hat, they embodied the laidback and melancholy dreaminess of the 1965 classic.
Gaga and Mars are both twice nominated this year for their duet "Die With A Smile," for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance and Song Of The Year, winning in the former category. Over the years, they have amassed 28 golden gramophones between them, including three for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance — Gaga for "Shallow" with Bradley Cooper in 2019 and "Rain On Me" with Ariana Grande in 2021, and Mars for "Uptown Funk" with Mark Ronson in 2016 — and one for Song Of The Year, Mars for "That's What I Like" in 2018.
Gaga and Mars wrote and produced "Die With A Smile" with regular Mars collaborators Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II and Andrew Wyatt. "I remember feeling that it was a song people needed to hear," Gaga told the L.A. Times. "I write music all the time, and sometimes you feel like you're creating something that some people might like. But there are other times when you work on something, and you just know it's going to speak deeply to all kinds of people. I knew it immediately."
She was spot on. In addition to the song dominating Billboard's Global 200 upon its August release, "Die With A Smile" is currently atop the Billboard Hot 100 for its fourth total and consecutive week.
For both stars, the song is merely a starting point of momentum for 2025. Gaga, who shared "Disease" in October and a new single "Abracadabra" just minutes after her duet, will be releasing her latest album, Mayhem, on March 7. In April, she'll headline Coachella. Meanwhile, Mars has been continuing his collaborative streak. His team-up with BLACKPINK member ROSÉ, "APT.," just surpassed 1 billion views on YouTube, and last month, he kicked off the new year with the Sexxy Red collab "Fat Juicy & Wet."
