GRAMMY Museum Celebrates Hawai'i's GRAMMY Nominees, Its Music, Hula & Culture
The exhilirating event featured current nominees Kimie Miner, Kathryn Schulmeister, and Amy Hanaiali'i, plus two-time GRAMMY winner Kalani Pe'a and Na Hoku Hanohano award winners Bobby Moderow Jr., Streetlight Cadence, Jeff Peterson, and more...
Of all the 50 U.S. States, you might be surpised to find that one of the smallest and the furthest from the mainland, Hawai'i, produces such diverse and prolific music scene - unless, of course, you've been - then you already know! For the unitiated, the GRAMMY Museum's annual event celebrating Hawai'ian music was the perfect primar for understanding and appreciated the rich culture - and best of all, the star-studded Salute To Hawai'i's GRAMMY Nominees concert at the Museum's Clive Davis Theatre was also pure fun.
Kicking off the night of live music, Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Bobby Moderow Jr. regailed the audience out of the gate with a touching and inspired performance, burning up his acoustic guitar, even reaching over the top of the neck with lightning speed to fret it with his forearm before zipping back around to continue to play, a parlor trick that complimented Maderow's beatiful voice and guitar work with the perfect amount of flair.
Switching gears for the second set, the first Hawaiian GRAMMY nominee of the night took the stage - but it wasn't to perform the traditional island music you might expect. Upright bassist/composer Kathryn Schulmeister, who is nominated for Best Classical Solo Vocal Album for her work on Susan Narucki's The Edge of Silence: Works for Voice by György Kurtág. A graduate of Punahou School, the same school former President Barack Obama graduated from, Schulmeister performed a transfixing modern Italian piece incorporating microtonal notes and elements of the blues that began with an original composition of her own. As she slid, glided and scraped up and down her bass' neck, she moved the crowd with her expressive and captivating performance.
Pop music in Hawai'i comes with a unique twist, and the young quartet Streetlight Cadence has that magic in spades. Also graduates of Punahou School and Na Hoku Hanohano award winners, the quartet of accordion, electric cello, guitar and violin (augmented and driven by a powerful kick drum) performed "Street Lights And Sirens," a tribute to a friend they lost in a car accident. The night's emcee then took the opportunity to teach the room the Hawai'ian word for "we want an encore": hana hou. Streetlight Cadence obliged, delivering an inspired version of their song "Thinking Of You."
Slack key great and Na Hoku Hanohano award winner Jeff Peterson was next on the lineup, and with some enlightening explanation from our emcee, Peterson schooled the room on slack key technique, stunning the audience with his gorgeos guitar work. He stayed on stage to accompany the great Amy Hanaiali'i, Hawai'i's top-selling female vocalst of all-time and current nominee in the Best Regional Roots Music Ablum category for Kalawai`anui. Proving why she is a marquee entertainer and fixture of Hawai'an music, telling fascinating stories of her grandmother coming to New York City and opening the legendary Hawaiian Room, coming to Los Angeles to lead the wave of Hawiian-themed boom in Hollywood and more. She closed her short yet fantastic set with a powerhouse version of "At Last," alternating between English and Hawaiian.
The final current nominees of the night ook the stage when Kimie Miner was joined by Imua Garza for an incredible performance including songs from Miner's Hawaiian Lullabye album, which the duo up for as producers in the Best Regional Roots Music Album category. Minor brightened the room with hypbrid English/Hawaiian lyrics to "You Are My Sunshine," shouting out her children in the audience and igniting the crowd into applause.
To close the evening, magnetic two-time GRAMMY winner Kalani Pe'a played a few tunes, leading the audience in a sing along ang bringing them to their feet for the finale. Always entertaining, comical and dapper, Pe'a even made mention of his purple jacket on display at the GRAMMY Museum, joking he wants it back because he wants to wear it. Leading the room in a sing-along grand finale, Pe'a united the room in the name of music, reminding them how music brings us all together.
With that, the crowd and performers alike filtered up to the Museum's scenic rooftop for a post-show reception - the perfect ending to a spectacular night of Hawaiian music and culture

Original Misfits Unleash One Night Only L.A. Reunion Show
Dark punk legends to play first show with Glenn Danzig and Jerry Only since last year's Riot Fest reunion
There's big news today for punk-rock fans aware that the Misfits made much more than just T-shirts.
The massively influential punk band announced a special show touted as the "only 2017 performance in this world… or any world" and billed as "The Original Misfits" in Los Angeles at the Forum on Dec. 30.
This will be the first Misfits show featuring original singer Glenn Danzig and original bassist Jerry Only with long-time guitarist Doyle Wolfgang von Frankenstein since the band reunited for a pair of Riot Fest appearances in Chicago and Denver in 2016. Last year's Riot Fest gigs, which featured drummer Dave Lombardo, marked the first time in 33 years the original Misfits members played together.
"OK Los Angeles, you've waited almost 35 years for this, here's your chance to see the "Original Misfits" in this Exclusive L.A. only performance." said Glenn Danzig. "No Tour, No BS, just one night of dark metal-punk hardcore brutality that will go down in the history books. See you there."

The 2020 GRAMMYs are just around the corner, and now the nominations are in for the coveted honor of Best Rap Album. While we'll have to wait until the 62nd GRAMMY Awards air on CBS on Jan. 26 to find out who will win, let's take a look at which albums have been nominated for Best Rap Album.
Revenge of the Dreamers III – Dreamville
Dreamers III, the third installment in the label’s Revenge of the Dreamers compilation series, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart and achieved gold status this past July. In addition to a Best Rap Album nod, Dreamers III is also nominated for Best Rap Performance next year for album track “Down Bad,” featuring J.I.D, Bas, J. Cole, EARTHGANG, and Young Nudy.
Championships – Meek Mill
In many ways, Championships represents a literal and metaphorical homecoming for Meek Mill. Released in November 2018, Championships is the Philadelphia rapper’s first artist album following a two-year prison sentence he served after violating his parole in 2017. Championships, naturally, sees Meek tackling social justice issues stemming from his prison experience, including criminal justice reform. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, his second chart-topper following 2015’s Dreams Worth More Than Money, and reached platinum status in June 2019. Meek Mill's 2020 Best Rap Album nod marks his first-ever GRAMMY nomination.
i am > i was – 21 Savage
Breakout rapper and four-time GRAMMY nominee 21 Savage dropped i am > i was, his second solo artist album, at the end of 2018. The guest-heavy album, which features contributions from Post Malone, Childish Gambino, J. Cole, and many others, has since charted around the world, topped the Billboard 200 – a first for the artist – in the beginning of 2019, and achieved gold status in the U.S. As well, nine songs out of the album’s 15 original tracks landed on the Hot 100 chart, including multi-platinum lead single “A Lot,” which is also nominated for Best Rap Song next year. 21 Savage’s 2020 Best Rap Album nomination, which follows Record of the Year and Best Rap/Sung Performance nods for his 2017 Post Malone collaboration, "Rockstar,” marks his first solo recognition in the top rap category.
IGOR – Tyler, The Creator
The eccentric Tyler, The Creator kicked off a massive 2019 with his mid-year album, IGOR. Released this past May, IGOR, Tyler’s fifth solo artist album, is his most commercially successful project to date. The album debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, marking his first time topping the coveted chart, while its lead single, "Earfquake,” peaked at No. 13, his highest entry on the Hot 100. Produced in full by Tyler and featuring guest spots from fellow rap and R&B stars Kanye West, Lil Uzi Vert, Solange, and Playboi Carti, among many others, IGOR follows the rapper’s 2017 album, Flower Boy, which received the Best Rap Album nod that same year.
The Lost Boy – YBN Cordae
Emerging rapper YBN Cordae, a member of the breakout YBN rap collective, released his debut album, The Lost Boy, to widespread critical acclaim this past July. The 15-track release is stacked with major collaborations with hip-hop heavyweights, including Anderson .Paak, Pusha T, Meek Mill, and others, plus production work from J. Cole and vocals from Quincy Jones. After peaking at No. 13 on the Billboard 200, The Lost Boy now notches two 2020 GRAMMY nominations: Best Rap Album and Best Rap Song for album track “Bad Idea,” featuring Chance the Rapper.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Take Over The GRAMMY Museum
Hip-hop duo discuss their career beginnings and creating their GRAMMY-nominated album The Heist
Current seven-time GRAMMY nominees Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, along with their manager Zach Quillen, recently participated in an installment of the GRAMMY Museum's A Conversation With series. Before an intimate audience at the Museum's Clive Davis Theater, the hip-hop duo and Quillen discussed the beginning of the Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' career, having creative control over their work and recording their GRAMMY-nominated Album Of The Year, The Heist.
"I met somebody [who] had the same dedication as me, [who] put everything into the music, everything into the craft," said Ben Haggerty (aka Macklemore) regarding meeting Lewis. "I wanted a career and Ryan was somebody [who] had the same discipline and sacrificed everything."
"I think it took a little while before it became clear to me who [Macklemore] was going to be," said Lewis. "I think the first indication of that was with the song 'Otherside' from the VS. Redux EP]. … That song … embodied so much. It was a story nobody was telling. … It was just somebody who was dying to be on the mike and to say something."
Seattle-based rapper Macklemore and DJ/producer Lewis have been making music fans take notice since they released their debut EP, 2009's The VS. EP. They followed with VS. Redux, which reached No. 7 on the iTunes Hip-Hop chart. The duo made waves in 2011 with the release of their hit single "Can't Hold Us" featuring Ray Dalton. The next year Macklemore was featured on the cover of XXL Magazine's coveted freshman class issue, and Rolling Stone dubbed the duo an "indie rags-to-riches" success story.
Released in 2012, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' debut studio album, The Heist, reached No. 2 on the Billboard 200, propelled by the No. 1 hits "Can't Hold Us" and "Thrift Shop," the latter of which reached multi-platinum status and remained on top of the charts for six weeks. The album garnered a nomination for Album Of The Year and Best Rap Album at the 56th GRAMMY Awards, while "Thrift Shop" earned a nod for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. The duo's Top 20 hit "Same Love" featuring Mary Lambert earned a nomination for Song Of The Year and has been adopted by some as a pro-equality anthem. The duo garnered additional nominations for Best New Artist and Best Music Video for "Can't Hold Us."

Walk, Don't Run: 60 Years Of The Ventures Exhibit Will Showcase The Surf-Rock Icons' Impact On Pop Culture
The exhibit, opening Dec. 7, will feature late band member Mel Taylor's Gretsch snare drum, a 1965 Ventures model Mosrite electric guitar, the original 45 rpm of "Walk Don't Run" and more
Influential instrumental rock band The Ventures are getting their own exhibit at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles that will showcase the band's impact on pop culture since the release of their massive hit "Walk, Don't Run" 60 years ago.
The Rock Hall of Fame inductees and Billboard chart-toppers have become especially iconic in the surf-rock world, known for its reverb-loaded guitar sound, for songs like "Wipeout," "Hawaii Five-O" and "Walk, Don't Run." The Walk, Don't Run: 60 Years Of The Ventures exhibit opening Dec. 7 will feature late band member Mel Taylor's Gretsch snare drum, a 1965 Ventures model Mosrite electric guitar, the original 45 rpm of "Walk Don't Run," a Fender Limited Edition Ventures Signature guitars, rare photos and other items from their career spanning six decades and 250 albums.
“It’s such an honor to have an exhibit dedicated to The Ventures at the GRAMMY Museum and be recognized for our impact on music history,” said Don Wilson, a founding member of the band, in a statement. "I like to think that, because we ‘Venturized’ the music we recorded and played, we made it instantly recognizable as being The Ventures. We continue to do that, even today."
Don Wilson, Gerry McGee, Bob Spalding, and Leon Taylor are current band members. On Jan. 9, Taylor's widow and former Fiona Taylor, Ventures associated musician Jeff "Skunk" Baxter and others will be in conversation with GRAMMY Museum Artistic Director Scott Goldman about the band's journey into becoming the most successful instrumental rock band in history at the Clive Davis Theater.
"The Ventures have inspired generations of musicians during their storied six-decade career, motivating many artists to follow in their footsteps and start their own projects," said Michael Sticka, GRAMMY Museum President. "As a music museum, we aim to shine a light on music education, and we applaud the Ventures for earning their honorary title of 'the band that launched a thousand bands.' Many thanks to the Ventures and their families for letting us feature items from this important era in music history."
The exhibit will run Dec. 7–Aug. 3, 2020 at the GRAMMY Museum.
