About Clive Davis
Clive Davis has four Grammy wins and five Grammy nominations. Born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1932, Davis was a record executive, producer, and music industry leader known for his ability to recognize emerging talent and transform rising artists into global stars. Among his many achievements, he's won multiple awards as a producer and executive while simultaneously playing an important role in the careers of some of the most influential artists in music history. After beginning his career as a lawyer, Davis became president of Columbia Records in the 1960s, where he supported the careers of Janis Joplin, Bruce Springsteen, and Billy Joel. He later founded Arista Records and continued to influence popular music across many decades through his work with Whitney Houston, Alicia Keys, and other major artists. Beyond his experience developing careers, Davis became widely known and respected for his instinct in identifying unique voices and creating career-making opportunities for rising talent, leaving a profound impact on the evolution of the music industry.
Davis' legacy is deeply intertwined with the Recording Academy, where he became a respected and beloved figure of Grammy history. A four-time Grammy winner, Davis was honored with the Recording Academy Trustees Award in 2000 and later the President's Merit Award in 2009, recognizing his significant contributions to the music industry and the field of recording. For more than 15 years, Davis partnered with the Recording Academy to host the annual Pre-Grammy Gala, bringing together legendary performers, rising stars, and industry leaders to honor musical excellence every year on the Saturday night before the Grammy Awards. The event celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2025, a milestone that emphasized his enduring influence on the Recording Academy as well as the music community at-large.
