At the 1989 GRAMMYs, Linda Ronstadt won the GRAMMY for Best Mexican-American Performance for her timeless album Canciones De Mi Padre. Sung entirely in Spanish, the album marked Ronstadt's first foray into traditional mariachi music and remains the biggest-selling non-English language album in American record history with over 2.5 million sales.

In her acceptance speech, Ronstadt thanked producer Peter Asher, Ruben Fuentés, her engineer and the mariachi bands who contributed to the recording. "I'd like to accept it on behalf of all the mariachi bands on both sides of the border who have been playing this music for years, from father to son and from master to eager student."
