By the time the 1997 GRAMMYs happened, the Smashing Pumpkins were chart-topping superstars thanks to their third LP, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. The album also helped the alt-rock group earn seven GRAMMY nominations — and lead single "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" landed their first win.
Upon winning Best Hard Rock Performance, Billy Corgan, James Iha and D'arcy Wretzky took the stage together to accept their golden gramophone. While the 6' 3" Corgan couldn't help but joke about the short microphone, the rest of the speech was filled with heartfelt gratitude, thanking their families, fans and record label for their support during a "really crazy year."
