The 1984 GRAMMYs were a history-making night for Michael Jackson, who broke the record for winning the most GRAMMY Awards at a ceremony thanks to his blockbuster album Thriller. And with his eighth win of the night — for the coveted Album Of The Year — he celebrated alongside producer Quincy Jones and CBS Records president Walter Yetnikoff.
As applause (and enthusiastic screams) filled the room, all three men expressed deep gratitude for each other and the honor. Jackson closed his speech with a heartfelt tribute to the late Jackie Wilson, who had passed just weeks prior to the ceremony.
"Some people are entertainers … Some people are followers. And some people make the path and are pioneers. I'd like to say Jackie Wilson was a wonderful entertainer," he said. "Jackie, where you are, I'd like to say I love you and thank you so much."
