Singer/actress Zendaya is set to star in A White Lie, the film adaption of Karin Tanabe's 2016 book, The Gilded Years.

Set in the 1890s, Zendaya will portray the role of the book's main character, Anita Hemmings, who becomes the first African-American woman to graduate from Vassar College. Hemmings — a light-skinned woman who is a descendant of slaves — graduates from Vassar by passing as a Caucassian. Meanwhile, the film will also feature a love story subplot, as Hemmings finds romance with a Harvard student in her new surroundings.

Zendaya will also produce A White Lie alongside actress Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter.

Earlier this year, the Oakland, Calif., native Zendaya starred in the blockbuster Spider-Man: Homecoming. In December the "K.C. Undercover" star is next set to appear on the silver screen opposite Hugh Jackman and Zac Efron in The Greatest Showman

Zendaya released her eponymous debut studio album in 2013. At the 58th GRAMMY Awards in 2016, she said that a new album would be forthcoming "soon." More recently, she has collaborated with artists on singles and videos for artists such as Bruno Mars, Prince Royce and Chris Brown.
