The young singer/songwriter Victory Boyd has a fairytale-like discovery story, with a fittingly dreamy, old-school soul lounge voice to match. She went from regularly performing in Central Park with her family to garnering the attention of none other than Jay-Z, who signed her and her siblings to Roc Nation. While her smooth, soulful vocals feel like they could have floated through a velvet-covered lounge in the '70s, the 21-year-old is bringing a modern take to a classic sound, with powerful lyrics as heard in her debut album, Broken Instrument. She's making a name for herself and already living up to it, having toured with other great singers/performers including Rodriquez, Jussie Smollett and Chaka Khan, and performing at 2018's Black Girls Rock Awards.
Boyd is featured in the first ever episode of the Recording Academy's latest video series, Press Play, which will help you discover and get to know artists you may not have yet heard of through original performances. She performs "Weatherman," which she wrote for her debut album. The song is a metaphor for the challenges we experience in a lifetime.
