New York state is giving the Universal Hip Hop Museum a $3.75 million state grant, CNN reports.

The grant is a "part of a statewide package of economic and community development funding" and was signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo last week. The $80 million museum will be built in the Bronx and aims to preserve hip-hop culture at a local and global level. It will feature a performance stage, music, a research space, video, photography and other artifacts.

"We want to empower, inspire and engage the community," museum executive director Rocky Bucano told CNN. "Hip-hop has touched every aspect of modern society and it's important for the community to know that it was created by people who looked just like them."

A museum pop-up exhibition called The [R]evolution of Hip-Hop celebrating DJ Kool Herc and other pioneers opened at the Bronx Terminal Market opened earlier this month.

It was announced in 2015 that the museum would open its doors in the Bronx. Last December, Chuck D was named chairman of the celebrity board. At the time, the museum had raised $20 million and was planning to raise another $50 million. The Universal Hip Hop Museum now plans to open its doors in 2023.
