In response to a Change.org petition that drew over 5,000 signatures thanks in part to public support from Metallica, the city of Alameda, Calif., has declared Feb. 10 an annual day of celebration honoring late Metallica bassist Cliff Burton.

Burton was killed in a tragic bus accident in 1986 while the band was conducting a European tour in support of their third album Master Of Puppets. He was originally recruited by the band to take over bass guitar duties shortly before the recording of their debut album Kill 'Em All, and played on all of Metalica's first three albums. Burton also received a posthumous writing credit on "To Live Is To Die," from the band's GRAMMY-nominated fourth album …And Justice For All.

Following the announcement from the Board of Supervisors for Alameda County, the band took to social media to celebrate the decree, and thank, "all of the fans who got behind this initiative."
The first official "Cliff Burton Day" will be celebrated on Feb 10, 2018, which would have been Burton's 56th birthday.
