When Kacey Musgraves released her fourth studio album Golden Hour on March 30, it became clear right away we would be seeing the country singer/songwriter in a whole new way — from her perspective, a more complete way.
"I was thinking about how there are different masks that we wear that represent different sides of us," she told Entertainment Weekly. "None of the masks are solely us, but they're all us. On this record, there's the lonely girl, the blissful girl, the new wife, the girl that's missing her mom, the angry girl, the sarcastic girl, the '60s-sequined Cruella de Vil with the beehive, the shy girl, the life of the party, the winner, the loser — they're all characters on this record. None of them alone are me, but the golden hour is when they all come together and you see me as a whole."
One track that clearly demonstrated this is the single "Space Cowboy," which Consequence of Sound called a "simmering ballad" with "astral production." Built on the lyrics, "You can have your space, cowboy/I ain't gonna fence you in," the result is a heart-wrenching pastiche that's so true to life you'll want to have it on repeat. To complement the lonely track, on April 30, Musgraves released an accompanying music video.

The video shows Musgraves at home alone doing dishes, singing from an empty bed and eating candlelit dinners for one with flashbacks to being with her "cowboy." The climax of the video comes with a blow-out fight that can only mean a relationship split as the "cowboy" rides off on a horse.
