"The title refers to when emotions take over and you just can't hold them back," the winner of seven GRAMMYs wrote to her fans on April 10, tipping the single. The emotional, anthemic nature of "Cry Pretty" perhaps makes sense considering this song marks Underwood's return following her accident last November.
Regardless, fans have certainly been feeling the latest single. Reactions have included complementing her vocal prowess, saying she's "belting the highest notes of her career." Some simply remarked on Underwood "slaying" the no-holds-barred tune while others took a more serious look at the authenticity of the song, which undoubtedly contributes to its success.

Underwood's co-writers on "Cry Pretty" — Hillary Lindsey, Lori McKenna and Liz Rose — shared wins for Best Country Song at the 58th GRAMMY Awards for Little Big Town's hit "Girl Crush." Lindsey's co-writing credits also include Underwood's "Jesus, Take The Wheel," a song that won Best Female Country Vocal Performance at the 49th GRAMMY Awards.
Another influence on "Cry Pretty" has been GRAMMY-winning producer/songwriter David Garcia, with whom she is working on her entire upcoming album. As an empowered co-producer, Underwood was able "to be involved in every aspect from start to finish," as she wrote her fans. "I've also been able to be creative in a way that I've never been before, which has been very fulfilling and empowering."
