Matthew Samuels aka Boi-1da is the producer behind one of Drake's biggest hits of 2018: “God’s Plan,” which is nominated three times at the 61st GRAMMY Awards, airing on Sunday, Feb. 10.
1da has been working with the Toronto rapper for years. And Drake isn't the only hit-maker the multi-nominated GRAMMY producer has worked with: Other heavy hitters include Kendrick Lamar (To Pimp A Butterfly) and Rihanna ("Work.")
So, how did the Canadian producer get to where he is now?
"One summer, I just spent the whole summer just making music in my basement and learning how to do it," he tells the Recording Academy in an exclusive video. "There's a real love and a real passion for it, so I really said, this is something I wanna do."
Of the time he first heard Drake rap a song called "Money," he said, "he really brought it from his own perspective, and it was really dope. This guy is gonna be a megastar one day.”
He delves into the rest of his story and his working style on the first installment of Behind The Board, which looks at the producers and other creatives behind the studio board.
