In a new spin on social networking, Josh Groban recently previewed his upcoming (read: fictitious) new album on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" The album, titled The Best Tweets Of Kanye West, features, as its title suggests, Groban on piano singing quotes from West's Twitter commentary. Tweets such as "Do you know where to find marble conference tables? I'm looking to have a conference…not until I get a table though" and "Black is the new black," have been transformed from mere words to lilting pop/classical ballads the singer is known for. You can watch Groban's performance for yourself, but here are our favorite selections: "Classical music is tight yo"; "French fries are the devil"; and "I make awesome decisions in bike stores." Selling millions of albums and concert tickets is one thing, but which artist had the cover power to sell the most magazines in 2010? Lady Gaga was the top monster, with Cosmopolitan's April issue featuring Gaga on the cover selling a whopping 1.7 million copies. Additionally, the July 8 issue of Rolling Stone featuring a gun-brandishing Gaga on the cover moved 245,000 copies. Finally, Gaga's Vanity Fair cover from September sold an impressive 450,000 copies. On the other side of the magazine wars was Taylor Swift, whose Elle and Glamour cover issues experienced disappointing sales. Swift's cover issue of Marie Claire was also the magazine's third-worst-selling issue through October.
Speaking of Gaga, she is one of two GRAMMY-winning artists who have put the finishing touches on their new albums for 2011. The lady announced the release dates for her new album, Born This Way, and first single (as well as a glimpse of the possible cover art) via Twitter: "The release date for the first single from THE SONG 2 13 11 THE RECORD 5 23 11." Hmm…Feb. 13 is the date of the 53rd Annual GRAMMY Awards (light bulb). The Foo Fighters will release the follow-up to 2007's GRAMMY-winning Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace in the spring. "Ladies and gentlemen ... we are officially done. Champagne, anyone?" head Foo Dave Grohl posted on his Twitter page, along with a photo. Guests on the Foos' new album will include Grohl's former Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic and Hüsker Dü/Sugar frontman Bob Mould.
Following in the line of hot reality TV star music debuts — who can forget Paris Hilton's lilting "Stars Are Blind" and Heidi Montag's contemplative "Superficial," Kim Kardashian has thrown her hat into the music ring. Las Vegas nightclub Tao debuted her new song "Turn It Up," which was produced by GRAMMY winner Terius "The Dream" Nash, to help ring in the new year this past weekend, and "the response was huge," said an unidentified source. We haven't heard the song yet, but this could be the start of something huge….
On that note, what did some of our celebrities have to say about turning the page to 2011? Continuing on the Twitter tip, for those interested in winning a date with teen heartthrob Justin Bieber, beware. An apparent budding relationship between Bieber and Selena Gomez has cost the young actress/singer death threats, according to Huffington Post and TMZ reports. It seems Twitter teens don't believe it's just innocent puppy love. "Roses are red, violets are blue," begins one post, "Selena Gomez if you'll [sic] break Justin Bieber's heart I'm gonna kill you." And Bieber was just looking for somebody to love.
Katy Perry's "Firework" holds the No. 1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for the second consecutive week and Bruno Mar's "Grenade" is No. 1 on the iTunes singles chart.
