Universal Hip-Hop Museum To Open In New York City
The long-awaited home for the Universal Hip-Hop Museum has finally been announced. Starting in 2022 when development is complete, the museum will be nestled in the heart of one of hip-hop's hallowed grounds, the Bronx, N.Y. It will be built in the giant Bronx Point complex, which will also hold a theater, education and affordable housing.
Once completed, the museum will become a state-of-the-art home to share the legacy of what the museum founders are calling "the world's most popular art form," including music, artifacts, video, photography, research space, and a performance stage. The museum will partner with technology companies such as Google and Microsoft to bring visitors an immersive experience.
The Universal Hip-Hop Museum project is currently in its fourth year, with rapper Kurtis Blow as its chairman, rapper Ice-T as a member of the founding board of directors and former GRAMMY Awards host LL Cool J as an honorary advisory board member. The Museum's Executive Director is Rocky Bucano.
"The Universal Hip-Hop Museum may be the single most important project for the preservation of hip-hop culture," Blow said. "This new cultural institution will be a great new tourism destination for NYC and the Bronx. What a great day for hip-hop!"
