Selena's Life And Musical Journey Gets Scripted Series

Selena famously won music lovers’ hearts and respect for a very simple reason: She was unabashedly herself: a Mexican-American young woman chasing her dream amidst two cultures. Now the iconic Tex-Mex/techno cumbia singer is getting a scripted Netflix series about her life story and how she surpassed  cultures and categories to bring her talent to the world.

Selena Wins Best Mexican-American Album

The series, described as a "coming-of-age" story, will be executive produced by Selena's sister, Suzette Quintanilla, and her father, Abraham Quintanilla, along with entertainment content production company's Jaime Davila, according to the Hollywood Reporter. Moises Zamora (American Crime) will write the script.

No premiere date or further information has been announced.

Selena rose to fame in the Spanish-language music market singing Tejano music and taking on cumbia, norteño and mariachi music. She released four successful Spanish-language albums, but ultimately, crossing over to American audiences was always the goal, music executive Jose Behar told the Recording Academy.

Behar signed Selena to EMI Latin.

"The whole thing with the Selena signing was … back then female artists didn't sell in the Tejano music market," Behar explained. "There wasn't one female artist that ever really sold or had any substantial success in Tejano music."

"But I never really signed her as a Tejano artist. I thought she was my Gloria Estefan. That was truly the emphasis on signing her," he continued. "We signed her with the vision of crossing her over, never really thinking we're going to have that huge success on the Latin side. It was always, always, always about the crossover."

Selena was born in Texas to a tight-knit Mexican-American family. Throughout her career, her family played a major role in her music. Her brother A.B. Quintanilla, now in his own group, the Kumbia All Stars, and her sister Suzette were both musicians in her band. Her father, Abraham, was her manager, portrayed as an over-protective and at times controlling in the 1997 Selena film with Jennifer Lopez.

When Selena won Best Mexican-American Album for Live at the 36th GRAMMY Awards, she made it clear how much her family meant to her and her success.

"I’d like to thank my band, Los Dinos, my father Abraham, my brother who's the producer of my music and also my sister. Thank you for all the support ..."

Selena's Netflix series will dive into her familial relationships.

"Selena will always have a lasting place in music history, and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives, Selena's sister, Suzette Quintanilla, said in a statement. "We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come."

David Bowie's backing bands are heading out on tour to continue the GRAMMY winner's legacy for the third year in a row.

A Bowie Celebration will tour cities in Europe in Jan. and early Feb., before hitting U.S. cities including Los Angeles, Houston and New York City until March.

The tour is formed by Bowie's "longest-leading and most frequent band member" Mike Garson, guitarist Earl Sick, bassist Carmine Rojas, multi-instrumentalist Mark Plati, guitarist Charlie Sexton and vocalists Bernard Fowler and Corey Glover, according to Rolling Stone.

The magazine reports that the band has been joined by several guest vocalists in the past, including Perry Farrell and Evan Rachel Wood, and plays hits like "Rebel Rebel" and "Ziggy Stardust."

"One way or another, David is continuously there with us,” Garson said in a statement. “He’s on stage each night, in the audience and always in the very essence of each song. We do these shows for the fans who’ve loved David and his music, and for those who are new to his music-they’re about to get hooked. Through this process of the celebration of his music, we do these shows for David who is a constant presence in our minds, hearts and soul."

GRAMMY-winning music legend Quincy Jones will receive a Special Achievement honor from the African-American Film Critics Association, the largest group of black film critics.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Jones and film producer Jason Blum are the latest additions to the AAFCA's 2019 honorees and will be honored on Feb. 6 at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood.

"Quincy Jones is a cultural icon," AAFCA co-founder Shawn Edwards said in a statement. "For nearly 70 years, he has helped shape pop culture as a music composer and producer as well as a film/TV composer and producer. His creative influence is unparalleled. He has molded the arts, film and music with a force that we may never witness again in our lifetime and given back all along the way."

The two will be celebrated along with the AAFCA's best picture winner Black Panther.

Netflix executive Tengo Nagenda, early jazz cornetist Buddy Bolden, searching director Aneesh Chaganty and HBO's Kelly Edwards are among other recipients who will have their own ceremony on Feb. 2.

The "DDu-Du DDu-Du" singers have yet to perform in the U.S., but they've already made a huge impression in the West

K-pop phenomenon BLACKPINK could be coming to a city near you in 2019.

The group's company YG Entertainment has announced that they are touring the world, with stops in North America, Europe and Australia. No specific dates for each continent have been released.

The "DDu-Du DDu-Du" and "Kiss And Make Up" (featuring Dua Lipa) singers have yet to play in the U.S., but they've already made some history here. BLACKPINKs "DDu-Du DDu-Du" is the highest charting song by an all-female K-pop group on the Billboard Hot 100. Their hit song same is also the fastest Korean group music video to accumulate 550 million views.

Even more impressive, BLACKPINK is also the first all-female K-pop group to perform at Coachella in 2019.

The fandom behind the group, who sing and rap, is massive outside of the U.S. Actor, director and producer (and former BuzzFeed employee) Eugene Lee Yang noted on Twitter how much the performance will mean:

"I've had countless chats with music insiders about its Western breakthrough, which has been happening the past few years. BLACKPINK playing Coachella is hugely significant. The locals have no idea what's coming."

Billie Eilish: "People Underestimate The Power Of A Young Mind"

The singer/songwriter gets candid about some of the conversations about her, revealing her thoughts on age and gender in a recent interview

It’s not a stretch to say that Billie Eilish is breaking traditional stereotypes. Amidst the 17-year-old’s singer/songwriter’s critical success is a love for oversized clothing and unconstrained use of the middle finger, all of which has the media debating her “It Girl” and “Pop Star” status.

Since releasing her first single in 2016, Eilish has caught the attention of a lot of fans with her singles and her Don't Smile At Me EP, which showcases her soothing vocals and R&B-pop sound.

The EP has reached over a billion streams and her 1 By 1 tour sold out in under a minute in 2018. This is still just the beginning for her; Apple Music Beats 1's Zane Lowe has said that 2019 will be hers "for the taking." And with her long-awaited debut studio album due sometime this year, there's no doubt that Eilish has much more to show the world.

In a new interview with NME, the Los Angeles native gets candid about some of the conversations about her, revealing her thoughts on age and gender, the double standards women face in the music industry, and how, because of her gender, people might feel like they have a right to comment on her life and appearance.

"If I was a guy and I was wearing these baggy clothes, nobody would bat an eye. There’s people out there saying, ‘Dress like a girl for once! Wear tight clothes you’d be much prettier and your career would be so much better!’ No it wouldn’t. It literally would not," she said.

Negative comments on her social media (she currently has 11 million followers on Instagram and almost one million on Twitter) keep her out off of social platforms. “F**k that sh*t. I just don’t wanna see all the horrible things people say," she said. But the negativity has not kept her from using her platform for change and inspiring young people.

"People underestimate the power of a young mind that is new to everything and experiencing for the first time,” she said. "We’re being ignored and it’s so dumb. We know everything."

In the fall, Eilish worked with Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti to get eligible people to register to vote during the midterm elections in November. "Bro, teenagers know more about the country that we’re living in right now than anybody," she said.

The singer also reveals that she didn't have a wealthy upbringing, as some might assume. Eilish grew up in a historic underserved neighborhood in Northeast Los Angeles called Highland Park, which lately has been experiencing changes due to gentrification.

"Highland Park has become popular now but growing up there, it was not like that at all,” she said. "There were gunshots and shit, y’know – it was really sketchy. People just have a different vision of how I was raised and that’s not correct."

While people wait for her album to drop, Eilish has been busy booking festival performances. She recently announced her Coachella performance in April, and late last year shared that she will be at Stockholm's Lollapalooza in June. Eilish will also tour Europe in Feb.
