Roy Orbison & Buddy Holly Hologram Tour Dates Are Here
BASE Hologram, the company behind the previously announced Roy Orbison and Buddy Holly hologram tour, has announced dates for the fall trek. The "Rock 'N' Roll Dream Tour" will have the two Texan-born, mid-century rock icons "touring" together for the first time, starting the North American shows in San Francisco, Calif. on Sept. 19 and wrapping up on Nov. 20 in Toronto.
Holograms apparently may solve the challenge of being in two places at once, as concurrent European dates will have the late iconic duo on both sides of the globe, starting in Dublin on Oct. 7 and concluding on Oct. 31 in Amsterdam.
The shows will feature a live band and back-up singers and, of course, the two holograms, who "perform" remastered audio of the two stars' hits.
The company first toured Orbison's hologram in 2018 and recently released a demo video of the Holly hologram, which was modeled to look like him circa 1957.
The singer was killed in a plane crash in 1959, at the height of his career, when he was just 22. Orbison's life and career went on for a while longer, but was also cut short, when he died of a heart attack in 1988 at 52 years old.
"These two men…defined the genre of rock and roll, from writing to recording to the standard band configuration, and they influenced everyone from Elvis to the Beatles," said Brian Becker, CEO of BASE Hologram, in a statement on their website.
"One of the things that really makes this particular hologram tour stand out is that a new generation of fans will finally get to see what Buddy Holly really looked like," Becker said in a statement for the tour.
He continued: "What people may not have realized is most of the color shots of him had been retouched over the years and the video is in grainy black & white. What you are going to see here is true Buddy at his finest and exactly how he would have looked if you saw him on tour."
Holly's widow, Maria Elena Holly, reflected on the connections between the two artists' in the press release. "[They were] Texans who shared a mutual respect and admiration for each other's creative musical genius and brilliant songwriting abilities." She added, "Their long-time fans and a new generation of fans will now have the opportunity to see these great legends perform together in a unique setting, showcasing two of the finest, most influential, and beloved artists in music history."
In a statement released with the initial tour announcement, Orbison's son and President of Roy Orbison Music Roy Orbison Jr. also spoke to the duo's deep musical connection: "Dad jammed with Buddy in Lubbock, Texas and helped change music history by turning Buddy on to Norman Petty Studios; Buddy later returned the favor by recording two of Dad's songs on his first Cricket's album. How beyond cool and special that these two great friends, now get to tour the world together."
Tickets for the Rock 'N' Roll Dream Tour go on sale to the general public on June 21, with a pre-sale running for 24 hours on June 19. More info on tickets, as well as the complete dates, can be found on the tour site.
