Paul Oakenfold On Playing Stonehenge: "I Think There Are No Boundaries With Music"

Last year he did a set on Mt. Everest, now the GRAMMY-nominated DJ will be the first-ever to play at Stonehenge. Oakenfold tells the Recording Academy why it's important for him to bring his music to such iconic, unexpected places

The GRAMMY-nominated producer/DJ Paul Oakenfold has been in the game for several decades now and has brought his sound to crowds of dancing fans at massive festivals and legendary clubs around the world. Yet, what is "expected" for a headlining DJ is clearly not enough to satisfy Oakenfold, as he has DJed at Mt. Everest Base Camp, the Great Wall of China, an ancient rainforest in Argentina, and now, later this week, Stonehenge. In an exclusive interview, he tells the Recording Academy why it is important for him to step outside of the box and bring his music to unexpected cultural sites.

"I think there are no boundaries with music and shedding light on these great sites around the world can only help/support local culture," he said.

"Through electronic music, I've always been about trying to push the boundaries. We can take the music out of the traditional set up, it doesn't just have to live in nightclubs," Oakenfold explains in the trailer for Soundtrek: Everest, the documentary shot during his set on Everest in April 2017, "The Highest Party on Earth." Yet, it is more than just a party in a super unique place. He also used the event to raise money for those in need, in this case for survivors of the 2015 earthquake in Nepal. It is important to him to give back through his music, and to bring that music to new and unexpected places, exposing people to important cultural sites around the world.

Oakenfold worked with the English Heritage charity to make his dream of bringing his music to Stonehenge and being the first DJ to play there a reality. The collaboration is a perfect matchup, as the organization works to preserve historic sites across the U.K. – all the proceeds from the event will go back to them. He told the Recording Academy that they will indeed be working together to bring more events in unexpected spots, set to Oakenfold's transcendental tunes. Read on to learn more about why he chose sunset at Stonehenge for his next legendary set, including why "It’s much more than just electronic music."

You’ve played The Great Wall, Mt. Everest, and so many other amazing places – why Stonehenge?

I’ve been very fortunate to play some very unique shows. We have partnered up with the English Heritage to do shows at some of the most iconic landmarks in Britain over the next few years to bring attention to the next generation and highlight why these venues are so important.

When is the first time you ever saw or went to Stonehenge?

I’ve been to Stonehenge many times in my life. It’s a unique and wonderful place. It’s over 4,000 years old!

How long did it take to put this show together?

It took over two years to put this show together working alongside Alon Shulman and the great team at the English Heritage.

Do you think your sets song selection will be influenced by the vibe of the site?

In terms of the set, it will really represent a cross section of all kinds of music. I think it’s really important because it will be a live DJ set to the sunset. It’s much more than just electronic music.

What are some other World Wonder sites you would love to play? Machu Picchu in Peru, The Great Pyramid of Gizain Egypt, Angkor Wat in Cambodia, Others?

I’ve been fortunate enough to play some amazing shows. I did a “Party At the End of the World," which was in a 1,000 year old rainforest in a town called Ushuaia. It’s the nearest point to Antarctica. Of course many years ago, I also played on The Great Wall of China. I think there are no boundaries with music and shedding light on these great sites around the world can only help/support local culture.

While this special event is limited to a very lucky group of 50 people, Oakenfold will be releasing a special Live At Stonehenge album to share the tracks with the rest of the world, just as he did after his Everest adventure.

Today Insomniac, which hosts the now-global Electric Daisy Carnival and other major EDM events, announced the highly anticipated lineup for its flagship Las Vegas fest, set to take place May 17–19 this year. EDC 2019 is positively stacked, featuring GRAMMY winners Diplo, David Guetta and Tiësto, plus GRAMMY nominees TOKiMONSTA, Paul Oakenfold, Deadmau5, Above & Beyond and Kaskade.

Deadmau5 will be making his first return to the fest since 2010, bringing his new "Cube 3.0" stage setup, and Guetta will be back for his first time since the 2012 event. Australian singer/songwriter DJ/producer extraordinaire Alison Wonderland, plus GRAMMY-nominated rave icons Steve Aoki, Armin van Buuren will also bring fire to the three-day event.

Unlike a typical music festival lineup, EDC lists theirs alphabetically by day, giving way to a treasure hunt to the many gems across the lines of names. Underground techno queens Charlotte De Witte, ANNA and Amelie Lens will all perform at the event, which has eight(!) stages, along with fellow techno heavy-hitter Adam Beyer.

South African DJ/producer and underground house legend Black Coffee will also perform, as well as fellow house heavyweights Green Velvet, Patrick Topping and GRAMMY nominee Eric Prydz. Green Velvet will be offering two sets, one as Get Real, his project with Detroit legend Claude VonStroke.

Several artists will be hopping on the decks together, including Topping, who will be doing a B2B set (a.k.a. back-to-back, or collab set, for those not up on the rave lingo) with fellow British DJ Eats Everything. U.K. dubstep stalwarts Skream and Rusko are on the lineup for an "old skool dubstep set," which, as Your EDM put it, is "absolutely unheard of."

But wait, who are the headliners? Pasquale Rotella, CEO and co-founder of Insomniac, believes that headliners are everyone that attends the festival, spreads the love and makes all the magic possible.

"Being a Headliner means looking at the world a little differently, and seeing beauty and inspiration everywhere you look. It’s about lifting up the people around you and making time for your family and friends. This is a journey we all take together—always connected and committed to one another," Rotella said in a statement on Insomniac's website.

If you want to get your dance on and check out the carnival rides, interactive art and plenty of lights and lasers with EDC in Vegas, you're in luck; tickets are still available. Check out EDC's website for more info.

Apple Music Removes In-App Social Sharing Function

The streaming platform notified musicians they are taking away the Connect feed, launched in 2015 for artists to share content with fans

Apple Music has reportedly sent artists an email to notify them that the Connect social sharing feed is being phased out and they would no longer be able to use it to share content with fans. Instead, streamlined artist pages on the platform will feature new design and functionality.

As reported by Variety, Apple initially unveiled the Connect function with the launch of Apple Music (its debut into music streaming) in 2015 as a way for artists to share content directly with fans in the platform, yet "saw less traction from artists than Apple had anticipated."

As 9to5Mac, the Apple-centric site who shared the message sent to artists, pointed out, Connect was popular with artists upon Apple Music's launch, but its popularity quickly dropped off. They highlighted that many artists only have posts from several years back, consequentially pushing Apple to shift focus away from it, moving it from its own visible tab within the app to a more hidden location below music recommendations and playlists.

9to5Mac shared the content of Apple Music's email, which included the following: "We're always looking for ways to enhance our focus on artists and help them better connect to fans. So we've given Artist Pages an all-new design and added new, personalized Artist Radio."

While Connect was originally billed as a way for artists to share special content with their fans, the popularity of other preexisting social platforms like Twitter and Instagram likely had an impact on its popularity.

It sounds like Apple Music, which has recently made major moves on its main competitor Spotify, is helping perfect the craft of music discovery and artist-fan connection in the music-streaming arena.

The tech company announced plans to build a new office in the Texas capital that will add 5,000 jobs, as well as new, smaller offices in other U.S. cities

This morning, on Dec. 13, Apple announced plans to expand its already large presence in Austin, Texas with a new 133-acre campus less than a mile from its existing 6,200-person campus.

The new office will allow the tech company to employ 5,000 more people, "with the capacity to grow to 15,000," in the music-centric city that is already home to its biggest employee base outside of its Cupertino, Calif. headquarters.

Apple ❤️ Austin! Proud to announce our newest campus there, along with plans for new sites in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, CA as Apple expands operations and creates thousands of jobs across the US.https://t.co/f2UwlXW2Hk

— Tim Cook (@tim_cook) December 13, 2018

In addition to increasing its employment capacity in Austin, Apple also is planning to create more jobs across the U.S. over the next three years, with new 1,000-person offices in Seattle, San Diego and Culver City, Calif., a doubling of its Miami office, plus hundreds of additional jobs in other cities.

The company also noted that the Austin expansion is projected to make them "the largest private employer" in the capital city of Texas. The city's mayor commented on the positive relationship between Austin and Apple, highlighting the "creative spark" both share.

"Apple has been a vital part of the Austin community for a quarter century, and we are thrilled that they are deepening their investment in our people and the city we love," said Austin Mayor Steve Adler. "Apple and Austin share a creative spark and a commitment to getting big things done. We share their commitment to diversity and inclusion."

A partnership between a creative city like Austin, the self-appointed music capital of the U.S., and a company like Apple, whose innovation and influence doesn't limit itself to just the tech arena, sounds perfect. Each spring, Austin invites rising stars and established greats in tech, film and music to South By Southwest, whose festivals, including the world-renowned SXSW Music Festival, take over the town for well over a week.

Apple Music, since its growth and genesis from iTunes, which changed the music-listening game when it originally launched in Jan. 2001, has always been a friend of—and power-player in—the music industry. For music fans, iTunes allowed its users to create and share all the playlists their hearts desired, and now, with Apple Music, fans' access to specially curated playlists is next level.

You can listen below to our very special 61st GRAMMY Nominee Apple Music playlist, which features artists nominated for Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year and Best New Artist, including Cardi B, Drake, Lady Gaga, Childish Gambino and more.
