Miguel Praises Prince, Talks About Performing "I Would Die 4 U" For "Let's Go Crazy: The GRAMMY Salute To Prince"
We talked with Miguel backstage durning the filming of "Let's Go Crazy: The GRAMMY Salute To Prince" to ask how Prince insipred his musical career and which song he performing during the tribute concert, which airs April 21 on CBS. Spoiler alert: he was tapped to sing "I Would Die 4 U" from Prine's 1984 masterpiece, Purple Rain.
"it's just an exciting song," he said. "In my memories of the film, it's sort of a celebratory performance, so I just wanted to make sure we can bring that same energy, an energy like that to it, and also give it my own thing, and make it my own. I think that's what Prince would have wanted, so that's what what we're going to do."
In the interview, he also digs deeper into what Prince has meant for him in making a life and career out of music.
"He's a huge inspiration and the reason I started to make music, and to write songs, and to pick up a guitar and to really pursue it as a musician," said Miguel.
With a total of 12 GRAMMY nominations under his belt and one GRAMMY win for Best R&B Song for his 2012 hit, "Adorn," Miguel has accomplished much in a short time so far in his career. Still, honoring his hero takes the cake.
"Of all the things that I've been able to do," he said, "This probably means the most, personally."
