Megan Thee Stallion Is The Latest Rap Star On The Rise

The Houston-based performer's debut 'Fever' is getting a lot of attention for its lyricism and style

There is a new leader entering the rap world according to Vulture, Jezebel and the Fader, and that rapper is Megan Pete, known by her stage name Megan Thee Stallion. The acclaim comes amidst her recently released debut album Fever receiving nods for its bars and assertive projection of her experience as a sexually empowered black woman, making her the latest hometown hero of Houston, where she is from.

In a recent Fader cover story, senior editor Lawrence Burney spends time with the Houston rapper and interviews her about her roots and her rise to fame. "In the last three years, she’s worked steadily, releasing four projects while dropping electrifying freestyles in between," he writes.

While she shares her hometown with Paul Wall, Mike Jones and Travis Scott, her music is transcending city lines on its own right while taking down male-dominated notions in the genre.

Taylor Crumpton breaks it down for Pitchfork:

"Reminiscent of Pam Grier’s dynasty of heroine Blaxploitation films that inspired Fever’s album cover, Megan’s sexual politics take center stage. For decades, black women in rap have been reduced to one-dimensional characters that lacked complexity, but Megan asserts herself as “Thee Stallion” and undoes the historically male-centered framework in favor of black women’s sexual narratives. Her assertiveness in the fulfillment of sexual desires and pleasures is highlighted by Southern laced samples of UGK, Three 6 Mafia, and Project Pat to illustrate a sizzurp-induced night of ecstasy, where Megan is in charge of her body, and models to “hotties” how to enjoy theirs."

She's receieved acclaim from iconic rappers too. Q-tip and Juicy J, who is featured on her album, among them. Although rap's latest internet sensation, has a history of music in her blood. Her mother, who is revealed in the story to have died recently, was also a rapper.

"Megan didn’t have to look that far for artistic inspiration. Her mom was a well-known local rapper for the majority of Megan's childhood, performing under the name Holly-Wood. She grew up regularly hearing her family play the likes of UGK, Three 6 Mafia, and Biggie Smalls. She’d even tag along to studio sessions with her mother," Burney reports.

The longform also reveals that Pete is a college student majoring in health administration with the goal of opening her own healthcare facilities. Burney notes, "It’s in these moments — cramming homework, stressing over chart placement, and mastering complex dance steps that might look, to the uninformed outsider, like simple ass-shaking — that Megan Thee Stallion’s rise becomes an obvious sign of her tenacity and discipline rather than a flash in the pan."

Cardi B has released her first song in nine months and has tapped in Megan Thee Stallion for the juiciest collaboration yet—pun intended.

"WAP" is a sexy song showing off how proud the "Money" rapper is of her vaginal lubrication. Short for "Wet A** P**sy," the song is Cardi B's first collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion—and their sexually empowered lyrics leave nothing to the imagination.

"Bring a bucket and a mop for this wet-a** pussy/ Give me everything you got for this wet-a** p**sy," Cardi B raps.

In the past, the rapper has expressed on social media how she feels judged for her sensual vocals, particularly when it comes to lyrics about her lady part.

"People will be saying don't like hoes and they don't like that p**sy talk. People love it. People love it. They love it," she said in a recent interview with New Music Daily on Apple Music.

Cardi B insists while some people may judge her for her lack of PG content, they like to listen to it: "There's different rappers that rap about those things that you all want to hear. There are conscious rappers. But you all not going to them. So you can't be mad."

"WAP" shows the rapper undoubtedly sticking to her guns. The just-as-sexy video, featuring both rappers walking around a house full of sensual decor in skin-tight, eye-catching outfits that serve non-stop curves, set out to not only celebrate sexual liberation but highlight female empowerment. To do so, the rapper invited special guests including Spanish singer Rosalia, who appears in a latex matador-inspired jumpsuit, and model/rapper/influencer Rubi Rose.

"I wanted a lot of different females, not just female rappers. I wanted different... A lot of different people," Cardi said about her vision. "And y'all going to see it on the music video as well, from models to influencers and everything. And I really wanted the video to be very sexy, very clean, very nice, very cut."

During her conversation with Apple, the Latinx artist said a months-long pause on music can be seen as a negative thing these days.

"When you put out music in nine months, people on social media will make you feel like you're doing something bad or you went away," Cardi B said.

The new song will be featured on her forthcoming album and follow-up to Invasion of Privacy. The rapper said she wanted to work on more music but the current times have her feeling a certain way.

"This whole f**king Coronavirus, shit. It's just really f**ks with things and how you want to move. Like even when I had a song, it just, I was like, damn, like I don't want to put my next song with a f**king Corona video in my backyard," she shared. "I want to f**king be able to f**king perform my song. Like that's what I want to do. I don't know when this shit happen."

Beyoncé has hopped on Megan Thee Stallion's "Savage" for a remix that is unleashing Texas fire all over the internet and will benefit Houston's Bread Of Life, a disaster relief organization, in their COVID-19 relief efforts.

The four-minute remix features a rap verse and back-up vocals from Queen B that continue in the spirit of the original song off Megan Thee Stallion's Suga EP, where she establishes herself as forever that bitch. "Hips tik tok when I dance/ On that Demon Time, she might start an OnlyFans" Beyoncé raps. "I'm a boss, I'm a leader, I pull up in my two-seater/ And my momma was a savage, think I got this sh*t from Tina."

Megan Thee Stallion adds a whole new verse, too. "Like Beyoncé, like me, he want a bitch like the Stallion with the knees/ He be like "Damn, how that thang movin' in them jeans," she delivers confidently on brand.

The remix is the first time the two Houston natives have come together and is a collab Megan Thee Stallion still can't believe. "I’m f*****g crying rn HOUSTON WE ON," she tweeted.

The song's proceeds will go to the aforementioned Bread Of Life, which is a part of the local organizations and nonprofits Beyoncé's BeyGOOD foundation is working with to continue aiding people impacted by the pandemic. Beyoncé has been vocal of the disproportionate effects COVID-19 has had on communities of color, and her foundation is working to alleviate COVID-19 effects on the hardest-hit communities.
