The Prison Concerts: Folsom And San Quentin (Jim Marshall's Photographs Of Johnny Cash) will display Marshall's historic images of Cash's 1968 and 1969 prison concerts. Cash's two performance at Folsom in 1968 resulted in a best-selling album and made him a legend in the eyes of his fans during a critical time for him professionally and personally. Cash became opinionated about prison reform and his performances at prisons made a new kind of statement in the music world.
Marshall was there to capture the epic moments of 1968, a formative year for Cash. Marshall's mantra was "Get The Picture!" He was able to get great access and always pointing his lens during the right moments throughout his storied career, and he is the only photographer to receive the Recording Academy's Trustee Award, which honors those who have contributed to music outside of performing, Described by friend and fellow photographer Henry Diltz as "irascible, impatient, explosive, but always very, very kindhearted," he is remembered by friends and fans for his distinctive eye.
"His images can be likened to haiku poetry: everything in its proper place … no "extra" information … only the very essences necessary to convey what he wants us to see," his friend Graham Nash wrote for the Recording Academy. "Jim's images always have a sense of completeness and his ability to compose instantly is renowned."
The exhibit will go on display from Oct. 24 and run through February 2019. On Tuesday, Oct. 23, a special panel with Marshall's estate beneficiary Amelia Davis and Scott B. Bomar, author of Johnny Cash At Folsom & San Quentin will discuss the stories behind the images and the new exhibit. Tickets are available for purchase here.
