GRAMMYs On The Road With Kid Color And Twin Shadow
The Recording Academy Chicago Chapter played host for GRAMMYs On The Road at Lollapalooza on Aug. 3–5 in Grant Park in Chicago. The Chapter conducted exclusive backstage interviews with artists performing at the festival, including house DJ Kid Color and Twin Shadow's George Lewis Jr.
Kid Color discussed his musical inspirations, the Chicago house scene, advice for upcoming artists, and the future of electronic music, among other topics.
"Some people are a little against the whole 'everyone's a DJ' mentality, but I'm actually really for it," said Kid Color. "I feel that there are a lot of people [who] are excited about dance music, way more excited than they were 15, 20 years ago.”
Hailing from California, Kid Color, aka Kyle Woods, has been diligently working at his craft nonstop after moving to Chicago to attend Columbia College. As a local DJ, his unique blend of soul and disco has earned him collaborations with artists such as house producer Derrick Carter, Holy Ghost! and Cut Copy, in addition to securing a residency at Smart Bar nightclub. Kid Color is currently working on a three-song EP, as well as multiple remixes and additional future live shows.
Lewis discussed his first performance at Lollapalooza, the New York electronic scene, his songwriting process, and current influences.
"When I was 9 years old I would've died if you told me I was going to play Lollapalooza, so it's exciting to be here," said Lewis.
Twin Shadow is the electronic/pop project of New York resident Lewis. In 2010 he released his debut album, Forget, which Pitchfork praised for its "intricacy and thoughtful storytelling." The album was produced by Grizzly Bear's Chris Taylor. Released in July, the songs comprising Twin Shadow's sophomore album, Confess, were largely inspired by a motorcycle crash Lewis survived. The album features the singles, "Five Seconds" and "Patient." Twin Shadow have tour dates scheduled in the United States and Europe through November.
