The Recording Academy Pacific Northwest Chapter played host for GRAMMYs On The Road At The Sasquatch! Music Festival, held May 25–28 in George, Wash. The Chapter conducted exclusive backstage interviews with artists performing at the festival, including indie alternative rock duo the Helio Sequence and electronica DJ/producer Com Truise.
The Helio Sequence vocalist/guitarist Brandon Summers and keyboardist/drummer Benjamin Weikel discussed the Portland, Ore., music scene, musical influences, their evolution, and their forthcoming new album, among other topics.
"Portland, as a city, over the years has [become] more and more alive," said Summers. "The beauty [of] Portland is there's not one unified aesthetic. … It's not constricting, everyone's very accepting of everyone else's styles and types of music."
Combining elements of indie alternative rock and electronica, the Helio Sequence were formed in 1999 in Portland, Ore., by Summers and Weikel. In 2000 the duo released their full-length album, Com Plex. Young Effectuals followed in 2001, garnering the interest of Seattle's Sub Pop Records, which subsequently signed the duo. Love And Distance followed in 2004 and their most recent album, Keep Your Eyes Ahead, was released in 2008. The duo recently completed work on their forthcoming new album, expected to be released this fall.
Com Truise discussed musical influences, the evolution of his sound and performing live, among other topics.
"The artists [who] inspired me to become a DJ were the Chemical Brothers [and] a bunch of drum and bass DJs," said Com Truise. "I started out in drum and bass music and then I heard [electronica duo] Boards Of Canada and I kind of changed all of my producing methods."
Com Truise is the project of producer/designer Seth Haley. Hailing from New Jersey, Com Truise creates what he calls "mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk" music. In 2010 he released a digital EP Cyanide Sisters. The EP was later remastered and released with four additional tracks on Michigan-based record label/music publishing company Ghostly International. Com Truise's first true full-length album, Galactic Melt, was released in 2011. Aside from recording his own music, Com Truise has remixed tracks for artists including Daft Punk, Neon Indian and Twin Shadow, among others.
