Contemporary Christian band Tenth Avenue North recently visited The Recording Academy's Nashville Chapter and participated in an exclusive GRAMMY.com interview. Tenth Avenue North discussed their songwriting process, how music has helped them through difficult times and their latest album, The Struggle, among other topics.
"In our genre, it's kind of funny how a lot of times it doesn't feel like music that everyone can connect with," said lead vocalist/guitarist Mike Donehey. "So we've always said when we write music we want to communicate what we believe is truth, but also the true struggle it is to believe that truth."
Tenth Avenue North, comprised of Donehey, Jason Jamison (drums), Ruben Juarez (bass), Jeff Owen (guitar), and Brendon Shirley (keyboards), took their name from a major highway in Palm Beach, Fla., where they formed in 2008. The band's major label debut, 2008's Over And Underneath, peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Christian Albums chart and featured "By Your Side" and "Love Is Here," which peaked at No. 2 and No. 3 on Billboard's Christian Songs chart, respectively. Released in 2010, Tenth Avenue North's sophomore album, The Light Meets The Dark, topped Billboard's Christian Albums chart. The band reached the top of the charts again with their latest album, The Struggle, which was released in August 2012. Produced by Jason Ingram, The Struggle features 12 tracks including "Losing" which peaked at No. 2. Tenth Avenue North will begin a global tour on March 8 in Honolulu, with dates scheduled through September.
