On June 26 Los Angeles-based rock quartet Dead Sara were the featured guests at 98.7-FM's Penthouse, an exclusive concert series hosted by Los Angeles-based radio station KYSR-FM at the historic Hollywood Tower in Hollywood, Calif. The band performed as part of the station's Warped Tour Encore Party, which also featured performances from members of We Are The Ocean and Anti-Flag. Before an intimate crowd of radio contest winners, Dead Sara performed a set featuring tracks from their self-titled debut album, including "Sorry For It All," "Lemon Scent," "Test On My Patience," and "Weatherman," as well as a new song, "Blue Was The Feeling For You."
Prior to the performance, Dead Sara vocalist/guitarist Emily Armstrong and guitarist Siouxsie Medley participated in an exclusive interview with GRAMMY.com and discussed their musical influences, performing on the 2012 Vans Warped Tour, common themes featured in their songs, and their self-titled debut album, among other topics.
"What I get from music that I absolutely love is passion and inspiration," said Armstrong. "It inspires me to do more. I would like to inspire [people] … just to do more in life. That's what I get from music I absolutely love, so I would love to be able to create that."
Formed by high school friends Armstrong and Medley, in 2008 Dead Sara released a six-song EP titled The Airport Sessions. The band added drummer Sean Friday and bassist Chris Null and in February 2012 released a three-song digital-only EP. Their self-titled debut album followed in April and features the Top 40 Rock Songs hit "Weatherman." Produced by Noah Shain (Skrillex) and released on the band's own label, Pocket Kid Records, Dead Sara spans influences ranging from classic rock and blues to folk and punk, and tackles themes such as the challenges of being a female-fronted rock band on songs such as "Lemon Scent" and "We Are What You Say." To date, the album has peaked at No. 16 on Billboard's Heatseekers Albums chart.
Dead Sara have performed dates opening for Chevelle and the Used, and are currently touring as part of the 2012 Vans Warped Tour. The band made their television debut in June when they performed on "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" Dead Sara are scheduled to perform at this year’s Sunset Strip Music Festival in August, and will kick off a tour with the Offspring this fall.
