Hardcore heroes Cro-Mags released their first new music in 19 years today, dropping the 3-song Don't Give In EP.

The band's lineup on the EP consists of Haley Flanagan, who won sole ownership of the Cro-Mags name in a legal settlement, on lead vocals and bass Gabby Abularach and Rocky George on guitar and Garry Sullivan on drums. As a result of the settlement, there is a separate iteration of Cro-Mags known as “Cro-Mags JM” featuring John Joseph, Mackie Jayson, A.J. Novello and Craig Setari, according to Consequence of Sound.

The new EP marks the first release under the Cro-Mags name since 2000's Revenge. After teasing on Instagram that the new music sounds like "Metallica meets Minor Threat," Flanagan described how the EP came together with Victory Records and Arising Empire in a statement:

"I got a strange phone call in the middle of the night that turned out to be from Tony Brummel of Victory Records,” Flanagan said. “I thought it was a prank call; it turned out not to be, and I worked out record deals with Victory and Arising Empire in Europe. One of the many things that make me happy about signing with Victory and Arising Empire is that they are genuinely fans of my music and know the history; they are not just labels trying to make money off us or the genre.”

Don’t Give In is available digitally here, with a 7″ vinyl version due out Aug. 2.

Original Earth, Wind & Fire members Verdine White, Ralph Johnson and Philip Bailey were on hand to recieve the honor, and while founder Maurice White passed away in 2016, his presence was felt nonetheless.

“You can’t play any Earth Wind & Fire songs without Maurice’s DNA being on it, so he’s always here and we’re always celebrating him and his vision,” Johnson said. “People are still coming together and having fun.”

An impressive lineup of artists took to the stage to honor the GRAMMY-winning band, who are approaching their 50th anniversary, including Cynthia Erivo, John Legend, the Jonas Brothers and Ne-Yo.

When asked about being the first African-American band to be inducted, Bailey said, “There are so many more African-American acts that are deserving and perhaps this can be the first of many more to come.”

This year's class also included legendary singer Linda Ronstadt, conductor Michael Tilson Thomas, actress Sally Field, and Sesame Street, which is also celebrating its 50th anniversary.

Ronstadt, who is the subject of a moving new documentary, was honored buy some of her closest collaborators, Don Henley and Emmylou Harris, as well as actor Kevin Kline, who starred alongside Ronstadt in The Pirates Of Penzance. Carrie Underwood, Trisha Yearwood, Aaron Neville and Flor de Toloache paid musical tribute to Ronstadt, performing some of her most well-known songs.

“She’s a huge inspiration and influence to each of us as musicians and as women in a male-dominated industry in our genre,” Flor de Toloache's Shae Fiol said.of Ronstadt. “She went forth and did everything her heart desired, and she set the example for us to do the same. We’re happy to be representing her Mexican side.”

The cultural materials collected by one of the most celebrated folklore collectors and musicologists in America's history are on their way to a classroom near you

The legendary body of work collected during the life and career of Alan Lomax is about to reach a whole new generation. The Alan Lomax Archives have announced an exciting content partnership with "Little" Steven Van Zandt's TeachRock and Rock and Roll Forever Foundation.

Under the new partnership, The Association For Cultural Equity in conjunction with the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress will provide content to TeachRock to be utilized in creating lesson plans and other teaching resources.

Working directly with teachers and schools TeachRock incorporates music into core curriculum by distributing lesson plans and other educational materials.Van Zandt, who is best known for his role as longtime guitarist with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, is an ardent supporter of music education. Perhaps the Boss describes the program best.

“[Little Steven’s] TeachRock program brings an essential curriculum of music and culture into school and makes it available at no cost to educators,” Springsteen said as he inducted Van Zandt into the New Jersey Hall of Fame last year. “In a time of cutbacks in arts funding, Steve’s programs are keeping kids engaged in the arts, and in school — this is his greatest legacy.”

Van Zandt's Rock and Roll Forever Foundation also offers teachers and school administrators workshops to introduce the concept of arts integration for culturally responsive pedagogy using their TeachRock curriculum. Wasting no time in their new partnership, the first four lesson plans developed from the Lomax Archive's resources are already available, and more are in development.
