'Blurryface' Sweeps RIAA Golds: Twenty One Pilots' "Unparalleled Achievement"

"Hometown"'s Gold certification makes the album 'Blurryface' the first in the digital era to have every single go Gold

On March 1 the RIAA announced that the Twenty One Pilots album Blurryface is the first ever in the digital era to have every single on the album become a Gold record. "Congratulations to Twenty One Pilots for this unparalleled achievement," said RIAA Chairman/CEO Cary Sherman. "In a time when fans enjoy instant access to millions of different tracks, this is a testament to the appeal of both the album and each of its individual songs."

Twenty One Pilots: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance

"This story, it starts in Columbus, Ohio," is how Tyler Joseph began the group's pantless (more on that later) acceptance speech at the 59th GRAMMY Awards when the single "Stressed Out" won for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. It remains the album's top sales performer, having reached seven-times Platinum. "Ride" went four-times Platinum, "Tear In My Heart" went double, and three other tracks achieved Platinum status, "Fairly Local," "Heavydirtysoul" and "Lane Boy." Seven of the other eight tracks had been at Gold level when "Hometown" came in finally, making this first-time accomplishment complete … in a back-to-Columbus kind of way.

Joseph blamed Josh Dun for the idea that had Twenty One Pilots in their underpants during the aforementioned acceptance speech on the GRAMMY stage, but as he explained, that plan predated their success. They were watching the GRAMMY Awards on TV with friends and Dun thought it would be cool, if they ever won, to accept semi-dressed. Joseph's wise closing words on his acceptance speech was not directly addressing such decisions when he said, "You could be next, so watch out!" Congratulations to Twenty One Pilots.

The Outside Lands festival is coming to San Francisco's Golden Gate Park on the weekend of Aug. 9–11. They announced their lineup this morning including 61st GRAMMY Awards Record Of The Year winner Childish Gambino and Album Of The Year winner Kacey Musgraves. Gambino aka Donald Glover also won for Best Music Video, Best Rap/Sung Performance and Song Of The Year. Kacey Musgraves' Golden Hour also won Best Country Album. Her track "Space Cowboy" won best Country Song and "Butterflies" won Best Country Solo Performance. The overlap between Outside Lands and winning at the 61st Awards doesn't stop there.

Other 61st winners in Outside Lands' lineup announced on March 26 are Leon Bridges, Lauren Daigle, Ella Mai, PJ Morton, and Anderson .Paak. Nominees from this year's show include Bebe Rexha and Tierra Whack. Tyler Joseph from Twenty One Pilots was nominated for Best Rock Song at the 61st as well.

The Outside Lands lineup is filled with winners of GRAMMY awards from other years as well. The list includes Edie Brickell, Flume, Lil Wayne, Paul Simon, and Mavis Staples. Blink-182, Counting Crows, Hozier, the Lumineers, and Bob Moses are among the artists in the lineup who've previously been nominated for GRAMMY awards.

GRAMMY wins and nominations are recognition for artists but the lesser-known acts coming to Golden Gate Park in August are also exciting and well worth a listen. We've covered San Holo, Yaeji and others. With a lineup this entertaining, the experience in the park this summer is bound to be fantastic.

"Levitate" Raises Anticipation For Twenty One Pilots' 'Trench'

A mysterious new video from the duo's forthcoming album arrives as anticipation for the follow-up to 'Blurryface' grows

On Aug. 8, Twenty One Pilots released "Levitate" from their forthcoming album Trench, which is scheduled for release on Oct. 5. When the head of the RIAA refers to your previous album, Blurryface, as an "unparalleled achievement" because every single went gold, the follow-up has some work to do.

The video for "Levitate" welcomes fans to the pair's refreshingly dark, alternative universe where the color yellow takes on a prominent yet unclear meaning. There are lots of vultures and fire — that much is clear.

The themes in the video continue those in July's "Jumpsuit," which was released along with tour dates and an audio-only version of "Nico And The Niners." The group's Twitter-banner offers a track list with "Jumpsuit" opening the album followed by "Levitate" as the second track. Now the "Levitate" video begins the countdown to the magnetic duo's upcoming album, leaving us wrapped in its enigma.

Presented as the conclusion of this "trilogy," "Levitate" follows on the official video for "Nico …" which surfaced later in July. Online riddle-solvers let us know its street scenes were filmed in Ukraine and that the video includes a Zoroastrian tower of silence where vultures "excarnate" human remains. Emotionally grim, yet tantalizing, it feels uncomfortably real, auguring well for the album to come.

Twenty One Pilots' "Stressed Out" earned them their first career GRAMMY at the 59th GRAMMY Awards for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The song racked up three total nominations for the band including Record Of The Year. Can "Levitate" raise the Columbus, Ohio duo up to the same level?

NYC Council Approves Wu-Tang Clan And Notorious B.I.G. Street Names

NYC is honoring rap history by voting to rename two streets after the iconic rappers

Notorious B.I.G. and the Wu-Tang Clan are steps closer to becoming a permanent part of New York City, their hometown and one of the birthplaces of hip-hop.

The New York City council has unanimously voted to have a Booklyn street become Christopher Wallace Way (after Biggie) and a Staten Island street become Wu-Tang Clan District. The measures are still pending Mayor Bill de Blasio's signature.

"As soon as you put a name on a street sign, you say something about the public importance of that individual," University of Tenn. Geography Professor Derek Alderman told NPR. "Hip-hop deserves that respect."

Brooklyn Community Board 2 first approved the re-naming petition 33-1 in November.

NYC resident LeRoy McCarthy, who led the naming initiatives for both streets, thinks naming a street after Biggie symbolizes something greater than the rapper. "It symbolizes a culture. It symbolizes a borough. It symbolizes a people, and hip-hop is worldwide,” he told Rolling Stone.

The council also voted to name a street after Woody Guthrie in Coney Island, where the iconic folk singer lived in the 1940s.

The block expected to become Christopher Wallace Way is on St. James Place between Fulton Street and Gates Avenue where B.I.G. actually grew up. Wu-Tang Clan District will be centered on the intersection of Vanderbilt Avenue and Targee Street, the location of Sobel Court Park, according to Rolling Stone.

The news of the council passing the measures came shortly after Chuck D was announced as chairman of the celebrity board for the Universal Hip-Hop Museum to open in Brooklyn in 2022.
