Andrew Pop Wansel

Emerging producer/songwriter/artist Andrew "Pop" Wansel was the recent guest for an installment of The Recording Academy's 5 Questions With … series. Held at The Academy's Philadelphia Chapter office, Wansel discussed social networking, his favorite song he's produced and his career, among other topics.

"[My favorite song I have produced is] "Unusual" [by] Trey Songz featuring Drake, and I'll tell you why," said Wansel. "That was the first song, of many to come, that I co-produced with both Oak [Felder] and my father. That was like a family affair."

The Philadelphia-born son of musician/songwriter Dexter Wansel, Andrew Wansel developed a love for music at age 5 while sitting in on his father's studio sessions. Under his father's wing, Wansel met several artists who played a role in him pursuing a music career, including Phyllis Hyman, Teddy Pendergrass and Lou Rawls. Wansel cites hearing Nas' 1994 hit "It Ain't Hard To Tell" as a turning point in his music career.

As a producer/songwriter, Wansel has gone on to work with artists including Busta Rhymes, Fantasia, Ginuwine, Lil Wayne, Kelly Rowland, and Britney Spears, among others. Most recently, Wansel collaborated with GRAMMY nominee Nicki Minaj, co-writing and co-producing her Billboard Hot 100 hit "Your Love." Signed to Universal Music Group, Wansel is currently working on his solo debut.
