Art Rockers Warpaint On Their Sound, L.A. And Being On Stage

The four women of Warpaint have created a psychedelic musical universe that is minimal, brash and atmospheric.

Stella Mozgawa and Theresa Wayman, of the Los Angeles art rock quartet Warpaint, spoke with Chicago Chapter at Lollapalooza 2017 about songwriting, incorporating influences, and their band's naturally cohesive sound. Drummer Mozgawa is originally from Australia and joined the band in 2009. "There was an idea of some kind of Echo Park scene … but I don't think it really exists," Mozgawa said, "because it's not as concentrated as places like Williamsburg or London. L.A. is … a kind of collection of giant suburbs as opposed to one focused city with a focused identity." Wayman spoke about the band's warm-up rituals before going on stage. "Every time you get on stage there's a bunch of people out there that you end up wanting to really connect with and play great for," she said. "I always try to put myself in that mode and think about … where I'm going to be in five minutes when I go out there and what I'm going to care about."
