Siedah Garrett On "Man In The Mirror" 30 Years Later
Executive Director of the GRAMMY Museum, Scott Goldman interviewed Siedah Garrett for this 2017 Los Angeles Chapter "Up Close & Personal" event exploring Michael Jackson's Bad album and its song "Man In The Mirror" 30 years after its 1987 release. When she gave the demo of the song she co-wrote with Glen Ballard to Quincy Jones she said, "The only thing that I ask is that you please let me know." Jones' response a few hours later was, "Sid, this is the best song that I've heard in 10 years." Several days later another phone call informed her Jones and Jackson were in the studio at that moment recording her song, and she spoke with Jackson directly about his minor requests for revisions. She covered up her fan excitement to calmly ask, "How can I help you?" The first thing Jackson said was, "I love this song." "It was such an amazing experience," Garrett said.
