Backstage at the Nashville Chapter's 2016 GRAMMY Block Party, gospel singer/songwriter Jonathan McReynolds spoke about his home town Chicago and its musical "pedigree." "It makes you have to be good very quickly," he said. He listed many of his influences including India.Arie, which transitioned to describing their present-day collaboration and friendship. He said songwriting and relating to other songwriters appeals to his inner "nerdiness," studying how to "take the colorfulness and turn it into the building blocks of a song." He explained the origins of the composition "Limp," on his 2015 Life Music: Stage Two, nominated for Best Gospel Album at the 58th GRAMMY Awards. "Keep on walking," is the message of the song, even if you're broken, which McReynolds believes everyone is to some extent. He also explains what he's found influential in the music of John Mayer, James Taylor and Stevie Wonder.
