As seated The Heavy are bass player Spencer Page, singer Kelvin Swaby, guitarist Dan Taylor and drummer Chris Ellul. They stopped by to talk to Texas Chapter at SXSW 2016. Their first record was 2007's Great Vengeance And Furious Fire, recorded as cheaply as possible in a bedroom in their home town of Bath, England. Returning to SXSW eight years after their first visit, their 2016 fourth record Hurt & The Merciless was about to be released, reflecting their greater experience and comfort in a recording studio. "We'll throw everything at a track in the studio because … there are no limitations to what you want to do," explained Taylor. "To recreate that on stage, you'd need 10, 13 musicians." Their best-known hit "How You Like Me Now?" first appeared on their 2009 second album The House That Dirt Built and has been widely used in television, movie and game soundtracks. "We have so many different genres of music that we fall into but don't actually become a part of," said Swaby. "I think we have our own genre … I don't think we sit in funk or neo-soul or two-tone or reggae."
