Grimes' Genre-Fluid Musical World Has Her In Complete Charge
At Lollapalooza 2016, Chicago Chapter sat down with Grimes and spoke about the positives and negatives of her being an independent. For example, the colorful cover art on her 2015 album Art Angels was yet another example where she did it herself and critics loved it, but there are downsides too. "I feel like I'm a producer who has to sing because I can't find anyone to basically work for me full-time," Grimes said. She also can be uncomfortable working with people because she doesn't want to be a control freak but she is used to complete control as a "one-man show." Directing her own videos has been a great new outlet because she does get to work with people as a director. She also discussed enjoying the musical heritage behind various genres and said, "You don't really get post-genre without genre to begin with." Grimes also called out Kate Bush and Trent Reznor for having been big influences.
