In this 2016 GRAMMY U event filmed at Recording Academy headquarters in Santa Monica, producer/creative director Robin Nixon interviews Garrett Borns known as Børns. This was one year after his 2015 album Dopamine debuted. "I had friends with sailboats and we'd always just go night sailing and play guitar and sing songs," he said, describing his Grand Haven home town where the Grand River from Grand Rapids meets Lake Michigan. A long drive to do a small showcase at SXSW hooked him up with an A&R guy who pointed him at some co-writing sessions in New York. "I knew it was going to take a lot more than that," Børns said about the opportunities that opened up from there, leading to Interscope and Dopamine. "I knew I was going to have to write a lot of music."
