At this 2016 Up Close & Personal Chicago Chapter event, singer/songwriter and GRAMMY winning former member of Destiny's Child, Michelle Williams interviewed 5-time GRAMMY winner Lalah Hathaway as well as music business executive Phil Thornton, who worked with Williams. Being the daughter of Donny Hathaway was only one of many family influences. "My aunts and uncles were musicians, my grandparents were musicians," said Lalah Hathaway. "It just was always the natural trajectory of my life so there was never a pressure to do it. I thought everybody's parents were musicians." When she discovered some of her classmates didn't know how to sing, she was shocked and scared. Thornton talked his way into a radio internship at 12 and finagled his way into an Arista Records internship in high school. Williams says he taught her that there is no fast track without a process supporting it. The Chicago Chapter partnered with the City of Chicago's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events to present their fifth annual partnership program kicking off the 2016 Chicago Gospel Music Festival.
