New York Chapter caught up with Andrew Marlin and Emily Frantz of Mandolin Orange at the Newport Folk Festival 2017. Marlin writes the songs and plays mandolin. Frantz's violin and the couple's singing complete their tight approach to making fresh Americana, bringing the spirit of the past into a revitalized present. For their 2016 album Blindfaller, the self-producing pair surrounded themselves with a quartet of other musicians, giving them a high-end of group intensity to deploy in the dynamics of their music. They spoke about folk songs' messages and their most memorable performance, the first time they headlined a big venue near their home town in North Carolina.
