The Recording Academy Pacific Northwest Chapter played host for GRAMMYs On The Road At The Sasquatch! Music Festival, held May 25–28 in George, Wash. The Chapter conducted exclusive backstage interviews with artists performing at the festival, including indie pop/rock collective Hey Rosetta! and alternative hip-hop duo Chiddy Bang.
Hey Rosetta! vocalist/guitarist/pianist Tim Baker discussed performing at Sasquatch!, the band's formation, songwriting, and musical influences, among other topics.
"I write alone [and] you're never alone when you're on the road," said Baker. "It's really difficult to find that calm place where you can hear the inspiration. You just kind of have to be a different character when you're on the road."
Formed in St. John's, Newfoundland, in 2005, Hey Rosetta! features Baker, Kinley Dowling (violin), Adam Hogan (guitar), Phil Maloney (percussion), Romesh Thavanathan (cello), and Josh Ward (vocals/bass). Hey Rosetta! released their debut self-titled EP in 2005, followed by the full-length Plan Your Escape in 2006. Into Your Lungs was released in 2008, followed by 2011's Seeds, which features the single "Yer Spring." Hey Rosetta! are currently on tour throughout the United States and Canada, with select dates scheduled through September.
Chiddy Bang's Chidera "Proto" Anamege and Noah "Xaphoon Jones" Beresin discussed the duo's formation, their recording process, and musical influences, among other topics.
"We do better in one place," said Beresin regarding the duo's recording process. "We've been trying to get better at recording while traveling because we travel so much. This summer we'll get our first bus and we're [going to] put a mic in there somewhere."
Hailing from Philadelphia, Chiddy Bang released the mixtape Swelly Express in 2009 featuring samples of artists such as Belle & Sebastian and Radiohead. In 2010 they released the single "The Opposite Of Adults," which sampled MGMT's "Kids" and earned the duo popularity in the UK and a Billboard Hot 100 hit. A summer tour followed with rapper Donnis and Bad Rabbits and in October 2010 Chiddy Bang released their debut EP, The Preview, which was produced by GRAMMY winner Pharrell Williams. In 2011 the duo released Peanut Butter And Swelly, a 15-track digital mixtape, and their debut full-length album, Breakfast, followed in February 2012.
