Starbucks, Lady Gaga: Cups of Kindness launched to benefit charity
Six-time GRAMMY winner Lady Gaga's Born This Way Foundation launched in 2012 at Harvard University amidst a large-scale press event, with a list of attendees and speakers that included Oprah Winfrey. The joint venture between the singer and her mother Cynthia Germanotta stated its mission as, "a youth-empowerment foundation," aimed at working to build a "braver, kinder world."
Programs launched by the non-profit have been lauded by anti-bullying and pro-tolerance activists, and shortly after its establishment Gaga was awarded the LennonOno Grant for Peace by two-time GRAMMY winner Yoko Ono for her work in building the endeavor.
Chief among those early programs established by the foundation was the Born Brave Bus, a special tour bus which traveled with the singer's tour caravan and acted as a welcoming safe space for fans from all walks of life who wished to connect with others and share their experiences. In announcing the bus project in late 2012, the singer clarified, "it will welcome anyone from any walk of life to come and hang out and talk about love, acceptance, kindness … this is not about saying, 'I need help,' but if you do, you can come. If you want to help someone else, you can come and say, 'Hey, what's up?'"
Always, when discussing her foundation's efforts, Gaga reaffirms that her movement is about returning positive power to the victims of bullying and abandonment, while also working to help the perpetrators of such behavior address the root causes of their actions. "How do we save not just the victim, but also the bully?" she often asks.
Now, to help support her organization's ongoing efforts of empowerment, the singer has partnered with Starbucks to offer customers selections from the Cups of Kindness collection, raising funds around their shared goal of investing in a "kinder, braver world." Starting today, and lasting through June 19, Starbucks will donate a percentage of profits from the sales of each drink to the Born This Way Foundation's new Channel Kindness project, empowering young people to document and share stories of kindness from their own personal worlds.
