Please join MusiCares and inspirational photographer and author of the acclaimed Through A Sober Lens: A Photographer’s Journey, Michael Blanchard for a discussion on Post Traumatic Growth - a positive change experienced as a result of the struggle with a major life crisis or a traumatic event. The discussion will focus on stories that exemplify how human beings can be changed by their encounters with life challenges, sometimes in radically positive ways. Michael also talks of his personal journey shaped by saying “Yes” to synchronicity rather than “No” and how it influenced such an improbable outcome. He will discuss how photography and the arts serve as a means of spiritual connection and bringing individuals out of isolation in helping overcome the disease of addiction.

MEET OUR PANELIST:

Michael Blanchard’s unexpected journey occurred after 4 DUI’s, a suicide attempt and over 3 months in both a psychiatric hospital and rehab facility. He transformed himself into an acclaimed photographer, writer, and philanthropist from his previous life as the COO of a large company. His book “Through A Sober Lens” won the Ben Franklin Award as most inscriptional story, and he has been called “The Ansel Adams of the Recovery World” by Recovery Today Magazine. He has is MA in Psychology with a focus on substance use disorder and has pioneered the use imagery and the arts in healing.

Please join MusiCares, Emmy Award winning producer, Richard "Wolfie" Wolf and guest panelist, GRAMMY-nominated, Justin Boreta of Glitch Mob, for the first in our series of workshops on Meditation and Mindfulness. We will discuss the benefits of mindfulness and explore various practices of meditation that can enhance the wellbeing of the music community. Each webinar will conclude with a 10-minute guided meditation.

Meet Our Panelists:

RICHARD "WOLFIE" WOLF
Emmy Award-winning composer, multi-Platinum-selling music producer and author Richard “Wolfie” Wolf has worked on projects with Prince, Bell Biv DeVoe, Freddie Mercury, MC Lyte, and Coolio, as well as hundreds of TV and film soundtracks including NCIS, Bojack Horseman, Oprah and the NFL. Wolf started practicing Zen meditation as a teen and his class at USC on the harmonies between Music & Mindfulness is the first on a university level to demonstrate how the different practices can interact and strengthen each other. His book “In Tune: Music As The Bridge To Mindfulness” was written up in The New Yorker -which called it “a manual for achieving calm in a tumultuous world ” - Parade, Mindful Magazine, Spirituality & Health and others, and is the basis for the podcast “Wolf In Tune”.

JUSTIN BORETA
Many music fans know Justin Boreta as a member of The Glitch Mob, a beat-driven electronic group that has been touring around the world for more than a decade, playing at festivals including: Coachella, Burning Man, Lollapolooza, Reading & Leeds and Bonnaroo. The Glitch Mob have released three albums and three EP's together as well as official remixes for Daft Punk, The Prodigy, Odesza, Metallica, and TV on the Radio and more. Boreta has collaborated with the spiritual teacher Ram Dass and Alan Watts on guided meditations. His ambient project Superposition (alongside Matthew Davis) was recently nominated for a 2021 Grammy for Best New Age Album.

Join MusiCares, Clinical Operations Manager of Monument, Sabrina Spotorno, LSW CASAC, and author and public speaker Janet Pfaff for an honest conversation about reaching out, connecting and offering hope and solutions to someone you love who may have a drinking problem. If your loved one is struggling with alcohol use, it can be challenging to figure out how to help them. This discussion will highlight the signs and symptoms of unhealthy drinking and alcohol use disorders, and tips on how to approach the challenging conversation with your loved one to best support them while caring for yourself, too.

SABRINA SPOTORNO LSW, CASAC
Sabrina Spotorno is Clinical Operations Manager of Monument and a therapist trained in several modalities, including Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy and Narrative Therapy. She aims to empower clients to recognize their strengths amidst life transitions and guide them to align their actions with their beliefs.

JANET PFAFF
Janet Pfaff is a music teacher, public speaker and author of Unfinished Rhapsody: The Other Side of Fame - a book about her daughter, Kristen Pfaff, former bass guitarist for the alternative rock band Hole, losing her battle with addiction. Janet's testimony of mental health and substance abuse awareness travails through the grieving process of losing a loved one to accidental overdose, and being a support system for family members struggling with addiction.
