MusiCares will host a discussion on the role of spirituality in 12 Step recovery programs as it relates to traditional religious beliefs. Marco Pardo, the spirituality counselor for Cri-Help, will address this issue to help those who have an interest in 12 Step programs understand how a spiritual process that focuses on recovery differs from religious faith. His goal is to help alleviate some of the confusion that can arise because the 12 Steps of AA and NA use terms like God, faith, belief, prayer, meditation, God's will, and spiritual awakening — terms that many of us only hear in religious settings. How are they similar? How are they different? What impact does it have on recovering people when we/they bring religious concerns to the 12 Step process? Pardo is open to all questions and welcomes a lively discussion.
A native of Bogota, Colombia, and raised in Los Angeles, Pardo has advanced degrees in counseling and guidance and pastoral theology. He is also a certified addictions treatment counselor and an adjunct instructor of addictions studies at Pierce College in Los Angeles. Pardo is the full-time spirituality/grief counselor for Cri-Help, a nationally recognized drug and alcohol treatment facility located in North Hollywood, Calif., where he has been employed since 2004.
