The pro/celebrity team of comedian Jon Lovitz and tennis professional James Blake defeated tennis legend Andre Agassi and musician Gavin Rossdale at the annual Night at the Net charity event benefiting MusiCares.

The game preceded the first match of the Mercedes-Benz Cup tennis tournament at UCLA and raised funds for MusiCares' Financial Assistance Program, which provides confidential crisis intervention, health care referrals and financial assistance for music people in times of need. Gibson/Baldwin presented MusiCares with a $75,000 check and the Southern California Tennis Association donated $10,000. A silent auction netted an additional $35,000 and an online auction launched at the event will also generate funds benefiting MusiCares.

Musician, "American Idol" judge and Los Angeles Chapter Governor Randy Jackson served as the host for the evening, and former tennis pro Pam Shriver joined in as chair umpire. Actor Alan Thicke and Debra Wilson from "Mad TV" served as line judges, with Pauly Shore making a brief appearance.

Musical guests included tennis stars the Bryan Brothers' Bob And Mike Bryan Band, an energizing performance from Kool And The Gang, and R&B singer Kem, who sang the national anthem.

MusiCares recently co-sponsored a successful hearing conservation outreach event, in collaboration with H.E.A.R. (Hearing Education and Awareness for Rockers), at the annual Audio Engineering Society's (AES) conference, held Oct. 7–10 at New York's Javits Convention Center. A steady stream of the conference's attendees visited the MusiCares and adjacent H.E.A.R. booths, where they received information on hearing protection and other health maintenance issues. They were also able to obtain either custom-molded or standard types of hearing protection. Approximately 650 conference registrants took advantage of this valuable outreach.

MusiCares had an active and visible presence at the 11th Annual Northeast Regional Folk Alliance (NERFA) Conference, which took place from Nov. 11–13 at Kutsher's Resort in the Catskills. The folk musicians, venue managers, label executives, booking agents and others in attendance were genuinely grateful to learn of the work MusiCares has been doing to assist musicians in crisis, from our efforts in response to Hurricane Katrina to our financial assistance programs. MusiCares literature, wristbands and other items were given out at the booth. In addition, MusiCares Director of Health & Human Services Dee Dee Acquisto participated in the panel "Surviving The Music Industry: Problems Of Addiction."
