You'll undoubtedly know Rufus Wainwright's voice from singing Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" in the film Shrek. As a singer/songwriter/composer, the GRAMMY nominee also keeps busy writing opera. Wainwright sat down with The Recording Academy to detail the process of learning to write opera, the epic love story behind his upcoming second opera, "Hadrian," and why opera does well in "tragic times."
"I think opera is doing pretty well now," says Wainwright. "In terms of communicating what's going on in the world, the angst, drama, and also hope and wishful thinking, I mean opera is the best instrument to really give us some sense of perspective."
