U.K. Charity Brings Live Holiday Music To Senior Centers

Proven to have positive benefits for all ages, this season U.K. senior center residents will be able to share the joy of music

There's no better way to spread holiday cheer than with live music, and thanks to U.K. charity Music in Hospitals & Care and window and door company Everest, seven senior centers across the U.K. will experience live holiday music concerts.

The concerts, which will be put on for senior center residents, their family and friends, and staff, have been shown to have positive health benefits, from reducing anxiety and stress to boosting the immune system and facilitating pain relief, not to mention how they  lift mood.

Music in Hospitals & Care and Everest put on a similar series of live concerts between November 2016 and July of this year for the senior population, and according to The Telegraph, 95 percent who attended a concert reported increased social interaction as a result, while 89 percent reported improved mood and raised spirits.

"Events like this take the residents out of their everyday routine and leave a lasting, positive impression," said Lorraine West, activities coordinator at Oakridge House in Basingstoke.

Music in Hospitals & Care has provided live music in healthcare since 1948, and this holiday season, they will provide many U.K. seniors something to sing along to throughout the season.

How Holiday Music Affects Your Mental Health

Love it or hate it, there's no doubt holiday music has an impact on our mental health

There are generally two kinds of people in this world: Those who love holiday music and those who can't stand it. Regardless of which side of the fence you stand, it turns out science has an explanation.

Scientists tell NBC News it all comes down to your childhood association with holiday music.

"Our response to Christmas songs depends on the association," said Dr. Rhonda Freeman, a clinical neuropsychologist. "Many of us associate this music with childhood and a happy time of presents and traditions and all the specialness that happens around that time of year."

However, on the other side, those who had a difficult childhood or who associate the season with loss find that holiday music brings on more painful associations.

The reason these childhood holiday music impressions have so much power over us even as adults is thatthe prefrontal cortex area of the brain, the rational thinking part of the brain, is still developing in children. As a result, a child's brain is more emotional, and those emotional associations around music stick well past adolescence.

Because we listen to the same body of holiday music year after year since the time we are small, and tunes like "Silent Night" or "Carol Of The Bells" are designed to elicit an emotional response, it makes complete sense it's hard to get these songs out of our heads and hearts.

So love them or hate them, know you're not alone in your holiday music feels.

'Tis the season, and even Billboard's Adult Contemporary chart is getting in the holiday spirit. Billboard reports they usually see a yearly spike in holiday-themed tunes on their AC chart following Thanksgiving, and this year is no different.

Mariah Carey Wins Best New Artist

Seal's "Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow" entered the chart at No. 18, closely followed by Gwen Stefani's "You Make It Feel Like Christmas" at No. 19. Tenor Russell Watson's "Do You Hear What I Hear" appeared at the No. 21 position, while Five For Fighting's "Christmas Where You Are," featuring Jim Brickman, landed at No. 24.

The band 98 Degrees' "Season of Love" came in at No. 25, marking their first Adult Contemporary chart hit since 2001. And of course, holiday music mainstay Mariah Carey lands on the chart at No. 28 with "The Star," followed by violinist Lindsey Stirling's "Christmas C'mon," featuring Becky G, hit No. 29.

These seven holiday classics join the four seasonal songs already on the charts, which have moved up in their ranking. These include Sia's "Santa's Coming For Us" (No. 6), Kelly Clarkson's "Christmas Eve" (No.10), Josh Groban's cover of John Lennon's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" (No. 12),and actress Jane Lynch's "A Swingin' Little Christmas," featuring Kate Flannery and Tim Davis ( No. 16).
