Thom Yorke Takes His Artistic Solo Catalog On Tour

For those ready to be fascinated, Yorke uncorks his solo supply of originals

While best known for his GRAMMY-winning work with Radiohead, Thom Yorke is now touring with his solo electronic material, accompanied by collaborator and producer Nigel Godrich as well as by psychedelic light-show artist Tarik Barri. This avant-garde rock catalog began with his 2006 album The Eraser, recognized at the 49th GRAMMY Awards with a nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.

The tour is named after Yorke's 2014 solo album Tomorrow's Modern Boxes, and Variety described the group's live set as an "electro-suite." In addition to performing new compositions and tracks from those solo LPs, Yorke is also performing songs from his 2013 album with Flea and Godrich titled Amok. They called their 2013 band Atoms For Peace, which was also the name of one of Yorke's tracks on The Eraser. The complexity is intentional, subtle and multi-layered. Billboard's review of his first Philadelphia set encouraged listeners to pay attention and be rewarded accordingly.

For a second encore, Yorke closed his Philadelphia set with "Unmade," from the soundtrack to Suspiria, his first public performance of the song. The film and soundtrack album were just released in Oct. 2018. The Eraser, Amok and Suspiria charted on the Billboard 200, so this is clearly art with a large following.

Tour details are on Yorke's website. For those prepared to be puzzled, delighted and entranced, this is a unique live experience, far out from the ordinary.

Thom Yorke fans can rejoice, the suspense is finally over. The elusive experimental artist has confirmed details for his follow-up to 2014's Tomorrow's Modern Boxes. ANIMA, the GRAMMY-winning Radiohead frontman's third solo studio album, will be released digitally by XL Records on June 27, followed by a physical release on July 19.

A press release states that the album's nine tracks include "several songs that were debuted live over the course of Thom Yorke, [producer] Nigel Godrich and [audiovisual artist] Tarik Barri's Tomorrow's Modern Boxes performances." As Pitchfork points out, the tracklist contains a song called "Dawn Chorus," which diehard fans may recognize as one of Radiohead's mystery songs they have used but never released.

The trio will be bringing the trippy, immersive Tomorrow's Modern Boxes experience on tour again soon, with new fall North American dates recently announced, to follow the July shows in Europe and Asia. All new shows go on sale to the general public tomorrow, June 21, with venue pre-sales currently open. You can find complete tour info here, and pre-sale info from the specific venues and ticketing platforms.

The new album is currently available for pre-order, which includes several vinyl options, all of which come with a bonus track, "Ladies & Gentlemen, Thank You for Coming." The limited-edition orange deluxe double vinyl comes with a hardcover lyric and art book.

The new album will be accompanied by a visual short of the same name, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson, with music by Yorke, featuring three tracks from the LP. The mysterious trailer, which you can watch below, was released today by Netflix, who will host the "one-reeler" video on June 27.

Earlier this year, Yorke released two new instrumental songs, which he was commissioned to write by the Philarmonie de Paris for French pianists Katia and Marielle Labeque, as part of the "Minimalist Dream House." His most recent full-length release was 2018's Suspiria, an instrumental score he recorded for Luca Guadagnino's film of the same name. Radiohead's most recent album is 2016's A Moon Shaped Pool.

Performing rights organization ASCAP announced on Dec. 18 that it is donating to MusiCares to support music's creators including those "affected by the recent wildfires in northern and southern California" needing help with food, shelter and replacement of instruments or equipment.

"We are truly grateful for the support and ongoing partnership of ASCAP," said Recording Academy and MusiCares President/CEO Neil Portnow. "Their work on behalf of music people is vital, and their generosity to the music community is equally strong. This donation demonstrates how the music industry works together to take care of their own."

"We have all been stunned by the devastation caused by the California fires and the heartache and loss suffered by our members who reside there," said ASCAP Chairman of the Board and President Paul Williams, winner of three GRAMMY awards as a songwriter. "ASCAP has always been an advocate for music creators, and faced with these terrible circumstances, we have their backs. We are pleased to work with MusiCares to get help to those who need it most."

Members may make disaster relief requests by contacting MusiCares toll-free at 1.800.687.4227.

For those wishing to donate, the "Gift Designation" choice at MusiCares' donation page offers "Disaster Relief" as a selection.

"The music community knows that it can turn to MusiCares in times of distress," said ASCAP CEO Elizabeth Matthews. "They have the organization and the infrastructure necessary to respond to these horrible events and help members of the music community in times of need. We're glad to work with MusiCares once again to ensure that our funds reach the people most affected by the fires."

Some of what makes festivals so unforgettable are the performances by newcomers and emerging artists. With many more expected on Firefly's multiple stages, a few who we've written about or spoken to include Alison Wonderland, Brockhampton, Dashboard Confessional, GRiZ, Kygo, Gucci Mane, Jessie Reyez, Snail Mail, Walk The Moon, and Young The Giant.

For your chance to see what makes "the east coast's largest music and camping festival" unforgettable at The Woodlands beside Dover International Speedway, tickets and special packages go on sale Friday Dec. 14 at the Firefly Festival website.
