A lot has changed since new jack swing — a fusion of R&B, hip hop and other genres — exploded onto the scene back in the '80s. Two of the biggest names in R&B, including GRAMMY-winning new jack swing producer/songwriter Teddy Riley and the great singer Keith Sweat, know that well. Together, Riley and Sweat created the new jack hit, "I Want Her."

Teddy Riley, Keith Sweat On R&B's Legacy

We caught up with the two music figures backstage at Essence Festival 2018 in New Orleans to hear about the legacy of R&B, the lack of  what they call "wedding" and "love-making music," and other ways they feel music is different now. They also shared how their music is being passed down to new generations.

Reuniting in 2005, GRAMMY nominees SWV — aka Sisters With Voice — returned triumphantly to an R&B scene that owes much of its modern swagger to the influence of their early career hits in the '90s such as "Weak," "Right Here," "You're The One," and more.

SWV Talk Today's R&B, Nicki Minaj & More

We caught up with the trio from the Bronx, N.Y., backstage at Essence Festival 2018 in New Orleans to hear how R&B's resurgence looks from where they sit, their thoughts on the legacy of new jack swing and Teddy Riley, and how hip-hop's impact on the music world — specifically Nicki Minaj — has affected them.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger personality than Lizzo. The hip-hop queen exudes confidence, humor and attitude. Her last album, Coconut Oil, established her as one of today's strongest voices for individuality and self-love, and she gained even more exposure as a judge on RuPaul's Drag Race. But Lizzo is just getting started.

Right before she rocked the stage at Lollapalooza, Lizzo stopped by to talk about her upcoming set, the new music she's working on, and how Drag Race changed her career.

The Shindellas may be new to the music scene — their debut single "Reconsider" was just released this June — but already they are working with GRAMMY-nominated producers Chuck Harmony and Claude Kelly. The all-female trio has "come together in sisterhood to sing songs about self-love, self-worth and self-respect."

The Shindellas On Working With Chuck Harmony

We caught up with the group backstage at Essence Festival 2018 in New Orleans to learn how it was working with Harmony and Kelly as well as how they have influenced their sound. They also share which music superstar they would like to collaborate with.
