The Recording Academy has announced its 2020 Special Merit Awards recipients, and it's one legendary list. Lifetime Achievement Award honorees this year are Chicago, Roberta Flack, Isaac Hayes, Iggy Pop, John Prine, Public Enemy and Sister Rosetta Tharpe. Ken Ehrlich, Philip Glass and Frank Walker will receive Trustees Award honors, and George Augspurger is being recognized with the Technical GRAMMY Award recipient. A special award presentation ceremony and concert celebrating the honorees will be held on April 18, 2020, at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium. Additional details regarding the ceremony will be announced shortly.

"Our industry is one that prides itself on influence and paying it forward, and each year the Recording Academy has the privilege of honoring a select group of visionaries whose creative contributions have rippled throughout our culture," said Deborah Dugan, President/CEO of the Recording Academy. "Our Special Merit Awards recipients have molded their musical passion into pieces of history that will continue to influence and inspire generations of music creators and music lovers to come."

GRAMMY-winning rock band Chicago are among the first acts to bring big jazz band-style horns into rock music. Following their 1969 debut album, Chicago Transit Authority, which was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame, they have released five No. 1 albums and nearly three dozen Top 40 hits.

Roberta Flack is a true testament of what music education can do if you foster talent from an early age.  Classically trained since age 15, she has garnered four GRAMMYs, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and an everlasting musical legacy with songs such as "Where Is The Love" and "Killing Me Softly With His Song."

A soul music pioneer, Isaac Hayes was an in-house songwriter/producer at the legendary Stax Records, where he wrote such hits as "Soul Man" and "B-A-B-Y." He also had a successful solo career, releasing the GRAMMY-winning "Theme From Shaft" in 1971.

Godfather of Punk Iggy Pop was the lead singer of influential proto-punk band the Stooges and has released more than 15 albums as a solo artist. With rebellious and sometimes dangerous stage antics, he has influenced countless acts, including Sid Vicious and the Clash.

John Prine's witty approach to storytelling has made him one of the most revered country & folk singer/songwriters since his emergence in the '70s. He has garnered two GRAMMYs and his classic eponymous debut album was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame.

Public Enemy are one of the architects of hip-hop, bursting on the scene in ‘86, with a sonic firestorm of hard-hitting political, cultural rhymes. They’ve since released 13 acclaimed LP’s including their classic album, It Takes A Nation Of Millions To Hold Us Back, which was named one of the greatest albums of all time by Rolling Stone. In 2018, their song “Fight The Power“ was inducted into the GRAMMY Hall Of Fame.

Sister Rosetta Tharpe's combination of gospel and blues, and her renowned technique on electric guitar, has influenced countless musicians, from Little Richard to Bob Dylan. The Godmother of Rock and Roll's 1945 hit, "Strange Things Happening Every Day," has been credited as the first gospel song to cross over to the R&B charts, becoming an early model for rock and roll.

Ken Ehrlich has shepherded the GRAMMY Awards telecast for the last 40 years and his ability to create events that are memorable and innovative has set a standard for television programming in the music industry. He helped pioneer the GRAMMY Moment — unique artist collaborations never before seen onstage.

Composer and pianist Philip Glass is widely regarded as the most influential composer of the late 20th and 21st centuries. Through his operas, film scores, concert pieces, theater works and wide-ranging collaborations with the likes of David Bowie, Paul Simon and Martin Scorsese, his music with repetitive structures has shaped the modern contemporary classical cannon.

Frank Walker began his career as an A&R scout for Columbia Records and went on to discover artists such as country great Hank Williams and blues legends Bessie Smith and Blind Willie Johnson. After wearing many hats at Columbia, he became the label chief for MGM Records in the mid-40s, where he introduced the soundtrack album concept and helped establish the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA).

An audio and acoustical engineer, George Augspurger has designed rooms for some of the most reputable studios in North America. After beginning his career at JBL, where he established the JBL Professional division, he started his own independent consulting firm, Perception Inc., and continues to work after 70 years in the industry.

The Lifetime Achievement Award celebrates performers who have made outstanding contributions of artistic significance to the field of recording, while the Trustees Award honors such contributions in areas other than performance. The Recording Academy’s National Board of Trustees determines the honorees of both awards. Technical GRAMMY Award recipients are voted on by the Academy's Producers & Engineers Wing Advisory Council and Chapter Committees, and are ratified by the Academy's Trustees. The award is presented to individuals and companies who have made contributions of outstanding technical significance to the recording industry.

Coachella, the most successful reoccurring festival franchise, is known for its wide-spanning annual lineups, which regularly predict and solidify music trends while also reflecting the current state of the industry. This year's artist roster continues the trend.

Here's a quick breakdown of the Coachella 2020 lineup and what it means for the year ahead.

Hip-Hop And R&B Lead The Way

With hip-hop and R&B surpassing rock as the most popular genre in the U.S., it's no surprise that Coachella, once a rock-centric festival in its early years, is leaning heavily into those dominating scenes. Two of the festival's main headliners, Scott and Ocean, come from the rap and R&B worlds, respectively. Even Friday headliners Rage Against The Machine, who headlined the first-ever Coachella in 1999, feature hip-hop elements in their rap-rock sound.

The Coachella 2020 lineup also features rising hip-hop and R&B artists and bona fide stars including Roddy Ricch, 21 Savage, DaBaby, Megan Thee Stallion, Brockhampton, City Girls, Doja Cat, Pink Sweat$, Princess Nokia, Summer Walker and others. This year's lineup expands Coachella's large bet on hip-hop and R&B as the de facto sound of the new decade, a continuation of previous years, with a larger focus on emerging artists and global acts.

Reunions, Surprise Acts And Comebacks

The big reunion at Coachella 2020 is the return of Rage Against The Machine, who last performed at the festival in 2007 and last played together as a group in 2011. Elsewhere, K-pop fans worldwide are ecstatic for the return of South Korean boy band BIGBANG, who are reuniting as a group for the first time since 2018, the year the act went on official hiatus after some of its members enlisted in their homeland's military and another member retired from the entertainment industry amid criminal and legal investigations against him. The BIGBANG booking continues Coachella's expansion into K-pop, which last year welcomed BLACKPINK as the first K-pop girl group to perform at the festival.

Read: Why is K-pop's popularity exploding in the United States?

The biggest surprise act to wow Coachella fans is Danny Elfman, the former Oingo Boingo frontman who's since become a film and TV score composer virtuoso. (You might know him best as the man behind the everlasting theme song of "The Simpsons" as well as the scores and music for major blockbuster films like Planet Of The Apes (2001), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985) and many others.) While Elfman may be the odd man out at this year's lineup, he joins fellow film score composer Hans Zimmer, who performed at the festival in 2017, in Coachella history.

Latin Music Comes Back Strong

The influence of Latin music at Coachella 2019 was undeniable. Last year's lineup featured Latin pop's heavy hitters like J Balvin, Bad Bunny and Rosalía. As well, Coachella welcomed Los Tucanes De Tijuana, a legendary band from Tijuana, Mexico, who became the first-ever norteño act to perform at the festival in 2019.

This year, Coachella continues the Latin music spree with confirmed performances from Brazilian pop superstar Anitta, Mexican banda group Banda MS and Brazilian drag star and pop singer Pabllo Vittar. The lineup also features rising Latinx indie pop and rock artists like Jessie Reyez, Cuco, Chicano Batman, Omar Apollo and Inner Wave. Ranking as the fifth most popular genre in America, Latin music continues its global domination on the charts and again at Coachella 2020.

The Many Flavors Of Pop

Ever since Drake headlined Coachella in 2015, the festival has experimented with mainstream pop headliners over the past five years: Calvin Harris in 2016, Lady Gaga (replacing Beyoncé) in 2017, Beyoncé (actually) in 2018 and Ariana Grande in 2019. For 2020, Coachella enlists a wide array of pop artists, each offering a distinct take on the genre. Acts like Lewis Capaldi, Alie Gatie and Marina lead the pack for the vocal pop singer-songwriter bunch. Lana Del Rey and FKA twigs, both billed as subheadliners for Sunday, will offer a moodier, more experimental pop experience. Then there's Charli XCX and Kim Petras, two alt-pop auteurs taking the genre to the future. Finally, Lil Nas X and Carly Rae Jepsen, both pop giants who tout global crossover appeal, will undoubtedly bring their viral sound to the festival masses. Coachella 2020 is a pop lover's dream come true.

Experiences As Artists

While not officially billed on the lineup, Kanye West stole the show at last year's Coachella with an Easter Sunday performance from his gospel group, Sunday Service Choir. The event was one of the most talked-about performances at Coachella 2019, essentially becoming an "experience within an experience." This year, Coachella continues the trend via two standout bookings: Emo Nite and 88rising's Double Happiness.

Emo Nite, which takes over on Saturday, is the wildly popular emo-themed event series from Los Angeles that has largely sparked the emo and pop-punk revival and emo nostalgia trend of the past decade. The throwback dance party has hosted performances, surprise DJ sets and full-on tours from the genres' mainstays, including 3OH!3, Blink-182's Mark Hoppus, Dashboard Confessional and From First To Last, featuring frontman Sonny "Skrillex" Moore. That's all to say you can expect a star-studded roster at the Emo Nite gig this April.

Elsewhere, 88rising, the hybrid management and multimedia production company and record label globalizing rap artists and hip-hop culture from the wider Asian-American and Asian markets, is presenting its Double Happiness event series at the festival. While the event, scheduled for Saturday, is featured as a standalone experience at the bottom of the bill, 88rising has confirmed several of its artists across the Coachella 2020 lineup, including Indonesian rapper Rich Brian (Friday), Japanese R&B singer/rapper Joji (Saturday) and Indonesian singer NIKI (Friday).

With Coachella leading the way, festival lineups this year may feature more experiences-as-artists bookings.

Tickets for weekend one of Coachella 2020 are now sold out, but presale registration for weekend two is now open. A first-ever presale for weekend two begins Monday, January 6, at 12 p.m. PT.

View the full Coachella 2020 lineup and register for the presale via the festival's official website.

Pop superstar Mariah Carey just set a new world record off the strength of her enduring holiday hit, "All I Want For Christmas Is You." After breaking three Guinness World Records last November, the eternal Christmas classic has now solidified Carey as the first and only artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart across four different decades.

As confirmed by Billboard earlier this week, the track entered the new decade at the top of the latest Billboard Hot 100 chart, dated Jan. 4, 2020, for the third consecutive week. The track marks her first No. 1 hit of the current decade and her 19th chart-topper overall. Her record includes 14 chart leaders in the '90s followed by four winners in the 2000s. "Christmas," which also topped the Holiday 100 chart for the 40th week, is Carey's solo chart champion of the 2010s.

The track's recent chart success is bolstered by a newly released music video for "Christmas," which debuted ahead of the holiday season peak last month.

Still, it's been a long (sleigh) ride for the track to reach No. 1. Originally released as the lead single off Carey's 1994 album Merry Christmas, her first holiday album and her fourth full-length overall, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart this past December for the first time ever—25 years after its original release—after reaching the top 10 for three consecutive years since 2017.

But.... what’s a decade? https://t.co/OaNK23GFuN

— Mariah Carey (@MariahCarey) December 30, 2019

The track is only the second holiday song ever to best the Hot 100 chart, following 1958's "The Chipmunk Song (Christmas Don't Be Late)," a GRAMMY-winning novelty Christmas song from David Seville, the stage name of Ross Bagdasarian Sr., and his cartoon band, The Chipmunks.

As the first-ever artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 chart across four separate decades, Carey beats out icons like Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Janet Jackson, Madonna, Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Usher, who have each topped the same chart across three decades.

The success of "Christmas," her most recent chart-topping hit, places Carey among the artists with the most No. 1 records overall, with The Beatles (20) leading the scoreboard followed Carey (19) and Rihanna (14).

Most recently, Carey completed the All I Want For Christmas Is You Tour, as well as special All I Want For Christmas Is You holiday shows as part of her Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace, in celebration of the track's 25th anniversary last year.

Carey is a five-time GRAMMY winner who holds a total of 34 overall nominations. She won the Best New Artist category at the 33rd GRAMMY Awards held in 1991.

GRAMMY-winning music legend Elton John is being celebrated by his native Britain for his incomparable contributions to music, philanthropy and culture with the exclusive title of the Order of the Companions of Honor.

"I'm humbled and honoured to be among such highly esteemed company in receiving the Companion of Honour. 2019 has turned out to be a truly wonderful year for me and I feel extraordinarily blessed," the enduring "Rocket Man" wrote on Twitter.

https://twitter.com/ejaf/status/1210888894641819648

We are so thrilled and beyond proud of founder @EltonOfficial today as he is awarded the Companion of Honour for his remarkable services to music and charity.

Congratulations Elton on this wonderful and well-deserved recognition. https://t.co/05PDizJeDu

— Elton John AIDS Fdn (@ejaf) December 28, 2019

The news comes with the recently released 2020 Honours List, in which Queen Elizabeth celebrates 1,097 new rankings of dames and knights each year. GRAMMMY winners Olivia Newton-John and Billy Ocean, along with Roger Taylor of Queen, and Gary Lightbody of Snow Patrol are also among the other musical artists on the list of high-level contributors to British society with several different ranks.

Watch: Elton John Discography: Icon Reflects On His Personal Favorite Albums

Australian-British singer/actress Newton-John "was made a dame for services to charity, cancer research and entertainment," as noted by The Guardian. Per Billboard, she is fighting breast cancer for the third time and has worked for years to support cancer research and funding with various philanthropic efforts, including the Olivia Newton-John Cancer and Wellness Centre in Melbourne.

"I am extremely excited, honoured and grateful beyond words to be included with such an esteemed group of women who have received this distinguished award before me," the "Grease" star said via Billboard. "As a girl born in Cambridge, I am very proud of my British ancestry and so appreciative to be recognised in this way by the United Kingdom."

Other powerful names in entertainment, like Oscar-winning British film directors Steve McQueen ("12 Years A Slave," "Widows") and Sam Mendes ("American Beauty," "Skyfall"). But as the Guardian points out, the majority of the list (72% this year) are made up of names we are less familiar with, yet nevertheless have dedicated themselves to public service. Simon Stevens, the Chief Executive of England's NHS, is one of these people, who has spent 31 years fighting for better public health funding.

According to BBC News, the honours list is published twice per year—during the New Year and on the Queen's birthday—and are informally approved by the Queen after nominees are approved by committees of "independent experts" divided by subject matter. "The system is overseen by the Cabinet Office Honours and Appointments Secretariat, and British nationals or citizens of the 15 Commonwealth realms can be nominated," BBC explains. Foreigners can receive honorary honours.

John was first knighted back in 1998—when he received his "Sir" title—and now joins a group of just 65 as a Companion of Honour. Fellow knighted GRAMMY winner Paul McCartney is also among this group, whose limit of 65 members at any given time includes the royal monarch himself.

He also received France's highest civilian honor, the Légion d'Honneur, earlier this year. The Elton John AIDS Foundation, which has organizations in both the U.K. and U.S., has raised over $400 million towards money to support HIV/AIDS research and prevention since 1992.

One of 2019's biggest music biopics, "Rocketman," highlighted the personal struggles of low self-esteem, toxic relationships and drug addiction John faced while bringing joy to many with his charismatic stage persona and groundbreaking blend of folk, pop and glam rock.

Kicking off in 2018, his massive farewell tour, appropriately titled Farewell Yellow Brick Road, has seen him bringing his joyful catalog of music to his countless fans around the world, with dates extending into 2020.

Neil Innes, a celebrated writer, musician and comedian best known for his work with The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band and The Beatles parody band, The Rutles, as well as his collaborations with renowned U.K. comedy group Monty Python, died Dec. 29. He was 75.

According to his agent, Innes "passed away unexpectedly" last Sunday. In a statement posted on Innes' official website, his family confirmed that he "died of natural causes quickly without warning and... without pain."

Monthy Python co-founder John Cleese shared his condolences in a post on his official Twitter page, noting that he was "utterly dismayed" by the news and calling Innes "a very sweet man, much too nice for his own good."

https://twitter.com/JohnCleese/status/1211665639917654016

Utterly dismayed to hear about Neil Innes. Right out of the blue...

A very sweet man, much too nice for his own good

Lovely writer and performer. When he worked with Python on our stage show, I listened every night to "How sweet to be an Idiot" on the tannoy

Very sad.....

— John Cleese (@JohnCleese) December 30, 2019

Born in Danbury in Essex, England, Innes attended Goldsmiths College School of Art in London, where he would join The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band (The Bonzos) in 1963. The group, which mixed elements of satirical comedy rock, psychedelic pop and avant-garde art, initially gained national attention via the U.K. TV series "Do Not Adjust Your Set," which featured daily performances from the band throughout the late '60s.

The Bonzos are best known for their 1968 hit, "I'm The Urban Spaceman," which reached No. 5 in the U.K. charts. Written by Innes, the track featured production by Paul McCartney, under the pseudonym Apollo C. Vermouth, and Gus Dudgeon. (The Bonzos would later perform their track "Death Cab For Cutie" in The Beatles' 1967 film Magical Mystery Tour; Ben Gibbard has since cited this track's title as the inspiration behind the moniker of his band of the same name.)

Following The Bonzos' breakup in 1970, Innes formed The World with former members of the band. The group, which aimed for commercial success beyond the previous band's satirical comedy rock style, released one album, Lucky Planet, in 1970.

That same year, in 1970, Innes formed the band GRIMMS, which released three albums throughout the '70s, including GRIMMS (1973), Rocking Duck (1973) and Sleepers (1976).

Innes then began to work closely with Monty Python, a much-revered comedy sextet from England, in the mid-'70s. Recognized as an unofficial member of the comedy troupe—a 2008 musical documentary, The Seventh Python, chronicles his life and career—Innes contributed to multiple Monty Python TV sketches and albums, in addition to touring live with the comedy crew. He also wrote original songs for and appeared in the group's classic film Monty Python and the Holy Grail and later appeared in the follow-up film, Monty Python's Life Of Brian.

Innes then worked alongside Monty Python member Eric Idle on "Rutland Weekend Television," a U.K. TV sketch show that ran from 1975–1976. The show, which featured music by Innes, inspired The Rutles, a pastiche and parody group of The Beatles. The act was the main subject of the 1978 mockumentary TV film All You Need Is Cash, also known as The Rutles, which featured cameos from original Beatles member George Harrison. The film's soundtrack album received a GRAMMY nomination for Best Comedy Recording at the 21st GRAMMY Awards held in 1979.

In 1979, Innes created a solo TV series, "The Innes Book Of Records," which ran for three seasons in the U.K. and featured some of his older material and new music written for the show.

Later in his career, Innes transitioned into children's entertainment during the '80s. In addition to playing live-action roles on children's TV shows, he composed music and provided voice-over work for various programs and cartoons.

Following reunion concerts and releases for his various projects, Innes formed the comedy musical collective The Idiot Bastard Band in late 2010.

Innes is survived by his wife Yvonne, his three sons, Miles, Luke and Barney, and his grandchildren, Max, Issy and Zac.
